Purple wool for newbie 7424xp?
Hey everyone,
I'm going to get a PC 7424xp soon (on the "Christmas list" if you will), but the LC pads are on sale until end of today at DetailedImage. So I was going to pick up a few since I'm placing an order anyway. I know my wife's car needs some pretty heavy work (It's an Infiniti G35 heavily swirled), and so I was getting an orange pad. But I'm wondering if I should get a wool pad, or if that's too aggressive for a newbie? I know if I use it I would need to follow up with a lighter polish, but since the car is black I was going to do that anyway. Or does using PWF mean doing three stage correction? Oh, and will I need more than one orange pad? Edit: Instead of piggybacking on the other thread, I'm looking at now the HydroTech Cyan and Tangerine pads instead of Orange/White traditional ones. Thoughts?

I'd consider the Hydro-tech combo that you mentioned paired up with some Power Finish and PO85RD. I tested that combo out and was impressed with the results. Consider getting the 5.5" size for the PC7424XP, it's smaller than the 6.5" for more bite but not as small as the 4" which can take a lot more time to complete a polishing session. I use between 3 - 5 pads per coat of polish. You want to swap them out for fresh ones every couple of panels for maximum results. If you use 1 pad for the entire coat, the polish will cake up on the pad, lead to more dusting and inconsistent results since you'll be getting more correction when the pad is fresh. If you have any other questions on anything, let me know. George |

Definitely too aggressive, at least to start. I've never used a wool pad on the PC either, but with soft Infiniti paint you should be able to achieve correction rates in the high 90s with the standard pads - orange, maybe yellow if it's in very bad shape in some spots. I haven't tried the HydroTech pads yet, so can't comment on those. If you get down to orange/yellow pads with aggressive polish, you're looking at a 3-stage job most likely. Don't think you can get away with two on Infiniti black.
The 5.5" pads are perfect for the PCXP, definitely go with those (and maybe some 4" pads for tight spots). Start with an orange pad and see how it does, move to the yellow if that's not cutting it (pun intended).

Thanks Jopa. I'll stay away from the Yellow and PWF.
As for the three stages, if I go with George's recommendation of Power Finish and PO85RD, what pads would I use for the third? 1. Orange PF 2. White PO85RD 3. ??

Ah, I figured you were planning to use SIP or another medium cut polish as a first step. PO203S (PF) is so versatile, you probably don't need three steps. Going from PO203S with an orange pad to PO85RD on a black pad should do the trick.
At worst, add an in-between step of PO203S with a white pad. I haven't worked on Infiniti paint before (and really don't think you'll need to do this), but just in case. Don't use the white pad with P085RD - ultra finishing polish needs a black or blue finishing pad.

I would go with SIP on light cutting pad (orange)
power finish on a polishing pad (white) 85rd or 87mc on a finishing pad (blue) those products/pads should give you a solid 90-95% with one round each... |

Any of the above mentioned polish combos should work great on Infiniti paint. Another option is the Power Finish using a Cyan Hydro-Tech followed by PO85RD on a Tangerine Hydro-Tech. I was pretty impressed with those results on soft paint, finished amazing.
Keep us posted on what you end up going with and how things turn out. |

Awesome stuff! Thanks for all the posts! I got some LC Pads from DetailedImage just before the sale expired (two cyan, two tangerine). Now I just have to wait until Christmas to pick up the PC - I have a full week off from work and will be spending a good part of it on the cars.
