You'll be interested to know that those speed indicator signs are deliberately made to read a little high so they match the speedo. Probably so too many folks don't cotton on to the fact their speedos read high. If you use a GPS speed indicator you will see at say 50mph accurate GPS your speedo and the sign will say 53/54 ish. So if a 50mph average zone will allow +10%+2mph = 57mph average, (that's 57mph real speed) then you could easily go through at 60 speedo speed and be fine. I chicken out though and go for 58 speedo cruise, which is 54 GPS in my van and the E63. |

The ACPO guidelines don't "allow" 57, they consider prosecution at it. They "allow" 56. Fortunately your chicken-factor compensates.

So you guys sit at 58 on speedo, 55 on GPS, in 50 zones and have never got in trouble for it? I have always been SUPER chickening out at 53 on speedo cruise lol.
Might up that to 56, or 58 if the road is clear and I can sit at that speed with no fluctuation

Be careful with that. Doughboy's calculation is flawed because he has counted the +2 twice. If you read the ACPO guidelines you discover that the +2 allowance is for the Police not for the driver.

The +2mph is their (the police's) "device tolerance" but it is still added to the +10% making a limit of +10%+2mph. 35 in a 30 46 in a 40 57 in a 50 etc. I'm not an expert, but any links / info? Last edited by doughboy; 10-29-2015 at 10:37 AM.. |

He he he just been tootling through this thread. I feel the OPS pain. Just in the lounge at Doha on the way home after another month in Saudi Arabia. Having driven out here for years it's such a breath of beautiful fresh air to drive at home. The worst UK driving is simply MILES better than the best UK driving. Word.

You are doing a genuine 30 (your speedo reads 32) and you are unlucky enough to be trapped by a radar that is at the +2 tolerance level. Police say you are doing 32 but this is not an issue because they don't prosecute at 32. You work out (from your formula) that you can safely do a genuine 34 and so a speedo reading of 36 is safe. The police record you at 36 (real 34 and their +2 error) and prosecute. |

For me if inside lanes are free and I'm doing the limit and they aren't and I pass them, then I can't see that as undertaking. Adios!

The whole 10% thing is crap. That's more discretion than law.
I've spoken to several police men and some of my friends have been knocked for less than 10% over the limit. |

OP, average speed cameras are normally used where there are road works. The lane widths are reduced and there are generally signs going into the restricted area telling you not to change lanes.
I object to cars going faster than the average speed who flash me to move over. Don’t get me wrong I hate lane hoggers, but in a restricted zone that is exactly what you are supposed to do. The car in front of you was within 10% of the maximum speed limit. Tailgating and flashing your lights to tell someone to move out of a lane they are not supposed to move out of is aggressive driving. |

Also I'm sure i know if you cannot change lane and that is not the case. Only bit where you're not allow to change lane is when you join M3 towards West from M25 section which is restricted. I know my driving standards. |
