I ordered this OBDII Bluetooth ELM327 from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0090ZJPMK/..._26725410_item. Works for Torque and BMWhat including coding and clearing codes.

I thought the BMWhat app required Wifi instead of Bluetooth. So it works for you with Bluetooth?

P.S. I guess it depends on whether you are using a droid device or IOS device. Looks like IOS is WiFi only.

IOS Requires the WiFi version due to the Bluetooth stack that Apple has restrictions on. For Android, you can use the cheaper bluetooth versions.

I coded a 2011 e90 335d with a $11 bluetooth elm327 (from amazon) on my Asus TF700T tablet. I had a few communication issues, but I think its because it was cold outside and the battery was a little low. The battery read 10.9v when it was having failures. After staring the car and letting it run for 5-7 minutes, there was no communications issues with the battery at 11.5v.

According to this web-site, the Actron/U-SCAN seems to have the most compatibility and features for the BMW diesels under the following parameters:

Bluetooth iPhone/Android compatible
Reads ABS codes
Live engine data monitoring

According to the product web site, it has standard and available software to do a variety of things:
  • Read codes and code definitions.
  • Erase codes and turn off the check engine light.
  • I/M Monitors (Emissions).
  • Manufacturer specific code definitions for GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Audi, BMW, Daewoo, Isuzu, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Saab, Subaru, Suzuki, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
  • Freeze Frame data - Details the conditions of the vehicle at the time the trouble code was set.
  • View and Graph LIVE Data - View RPMs, coolant temperature, oxygen sensor readings and more for a faster diagnosis. Over 300 sensor and data items are available as supported by vehicle.
  • Unlock CodeConnect™ and access the most likely cause of the check engine light. Get manufacturer specific powertrain DTC fixes.
Does anyone have experience with this device? Opinions?

BMW what might be able to use some Bluetooth to read but can't code without a wire depending on the year of your car.

Thanks to the stupid differing requirements for BMWhat and my general inability to read instructions, I now own 3 OBD2 readers. The BMWhat wife and Bluetooth adapter as well as OBDLink MX for using Torque Pro on Android. The OBDLink MX is great in that it automatically powers off so you don't have to remove it. BMWhat for Android simply won't work properly in my experience without their adapter.
