has to be a golf surely?

- the megane and clio might be fast - but they are made by renault! - the build quality is awful - it would be a real let down after your 335i - same for the arse-tra VXR and whatever the ford focus chav-mobile is called these days - you just couldn't live with it could you???

what about a used 130i?

or an audi S3?

Some of the above is true. The Leon has better brakes in the highest trim levels, but it costs more (yeah - I dunno why either) and has a shit interior with no chance of sat nav or other good options.

It also lacks in areas the Golf doesn't. It's Intercooler for starters. You pay your money and make your choice...

I bought a 1 owner, well loved GTI Edition 30 with a few good Mods (LSD, remapped) for 13.5k and its in danger of becoming my Fave car ever.

It has nav, heated seats etc and the build is as good as BMW I'd say.

I too have recently bought a Golf GTI Edition 30. Previously had an E92 M3, but had to downsize due to impending fatherhood. I've found the Edition 30 to be a cracking wee car. Is fast enough in standard form, but can be turned into a bit of an animal for a modest outlay. Its practical and comfortable, but also fun and chuckable when you want it to be. I got a lightly used late 2007 car for £13,500 from a main VW dealer, so they're pretty cheap too. As for MPG I'm getting around 28.5, and I dont hang about. In the past I've also owned a Civic type r which was great fun for blasting around your favourite B roads in, but terrible for long journeys, and an Audi S3 (latest model) which was also a brilliant hot hatch, and probably better than the Edition 30 because of the quattro system, but it will cost you more to buy than the Golf.

I have always said I would buy a Gti one day (in black), you guys raving about the Ed30 @13k is tempting!

Is there much difference between the mk6?

Mk 6 get a few more horsepower, think its 211. Will be quite a bit more expensive.

I think the mk6 is a bit more "grown up" but less focussed? That's what some reviews say anyway!

I prefer the front of the mk5 but the back of the mk6. I think the mk6 interior is a notch up as well - the mk5 dash was a bit average. One thing the mk4 did well (and it didn't do much well apart from in the R32) was the interior. The mk5 was a step backwards inside but had a chassis about a billion times better - they nicked the Ford Focus chassis engineer for it.

The Mk5 was well engineered and rumoured to have almost doubled VAG's production time, the doors in particular were time consuming. As with most VW's the interior was a bit utilitarian, but hard wearing.

I think the Mk6 is too soft looking, from most angles. My experience of the dealer network was pretty poor. My Mk5 GTi had the transit blocks left fitted and the Mk5 R32 had a piss poor repair done to the tailgate, which the dealer kept me waiting 5 hours, too repair it badly.

Although I found most were up for a deal and offered decent discounts.

Creepy - which did you prefer, the R32 or the GTi?

I only had the mk4 R32 but really liked it.

GTi was my favourite, TBH the R32 was a let down, all due to the notchy 1st -2nd gear.

In fact, if I had to have a car maximum value circa £20k, I'd have another GTi in a heartbeat.

Brakes on a ED30 are poor , I just fitted a new set off S3 AUDI 345mm on front and 310mm on the rear for less than £1k then selling the old ones for £250 cheap solution and they just bolt straight on .

A very decent car for small money imho. just make sure its a ED30 with the stronger engine

Yes correct , but the ED30 is 230bhp .it uses the S3 audi engine and can be set back to the unrestricted 265bhp for very small money ,It has the KO4 turbo that is bigger than a stock GTI ..

Lovely cheap motor

DSG or manual?

TBH the manual box in my mk4 R32 wasn't the best but it wasn't notchy. The looks of the mk5 R32 put me off - that chrome grille was wrong. However I was very tempted when they flogged off the last lot super cheaply.
