Yes, I know the default answer to this question is "of course not," but let me explain:

- Bought this 2011 335d from a dealership in January - 90K miles, entire life in Texas & California
- Two weeks ago, got a Service Due message and scheduled with the dealership, thinking it would just be oil & filter (yea right)
- Three days ago, I got the "Engine Malfunction - Reduced Engine Power" warning immediately upon start
- The very next time I turned it off, I got two more warnings - a rear brake light out and a DRL out, both on the left side

Now the stealership wants $699 to replace the MAF sensor and $220 to repluce two bulbs - not a chance.

My questions are, What is this really? And is it mere coincidence that the MAF Sensor and two bulbs went out at the same time?

Relevant details & diligence:
- Since it’s arrival, I’ve consistently gotten messages about battery drain. Either that the charge level is low, or that discharge is high. I’ve known I’ll replace it eventually, but being summer it’s not a huge problem / priority (unless it’s causing other problems).
- According to Carly, the two fault codes being thrown in the engine are 4BC2 (Air flow meter signal) and 4BC6 (Intake frequency to low (sic)). If I clear them while driving, they immediately come back. I have tried cleaning the air filter, cleaning the MAF sensor and contacts, and disconnecting the sensor entirely (fault codes persist).
- The front left halo light comes on with the car (i.e. is not burned out), but goes out if the DRL’s are turned off then back on. I’ve not been able to reproduce the brake light failure. Carly faults are A8C3 and A8C5, and only appear when turning the car off. The fuses are seated and in good condition. While I realize that light bulbs are cheap and relatively easy to replace, I’m more interested in the overlapping timing - that these two went out at the same time the MAF sensor appeared to fail.

Change your battery first. These cars hate voltage issues and can throw false alarms.

You can get the same Bosch MAF that BMW uses for under $200 from rock auto. Change it yourself.

Chipwell, buy the MAF from FCP Euro, its like $220 I think (they also price match). You get lifetime warranty on the product, simply buy another MAF if needed, send back the old MAF, and you get your cash back.
