Is there an optician on board?

Could there be too great a difference between my near sight prescription and my far sight prescription to make varifocals not feasible? If so could anyone tell me at what point it becomes impractical. Over the last two years I have had two new sets of varifocals and both have been useless. When you go to complain you see sales staff who refer you to the agreement that if you do not like the varifocals they will fit you up with one pair of distance and one pair of readers.
I have been using varifocals for a number of years and been quite happy with them. So now I have four pair of glasses that I will not use,and I am still using glasses with a three year old prescription.
