Feeler - Clown nose LED Flasher alarm simulation

If you're like me, you don't want to spend a lot of money for an alarm, but would mind the idea of a deterrent. I stumbled across a DIY on this site to make a small electronic device to flash the LED in the clown nose and simulate the factory alarm.

I took the original post by ms_info a few step further and made a clean little device to do just this.

For more details, see this thread:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25207

If you go to the last page you'll see the device. This installs in your roof liner under the control for the sunroof and wires in to cause the clown nose LED to flash when the car is turned off.

I was thinking about producing these for people who would be interested. Cost would be about $20 each including shipping.

I am not in business, this is just a hobby, so I am trying to cover my cost plus get enough to buy a beer or two.

I will be posting a video soon to show what it looks like when active.

If anyone is interested, PM me so I can see if there is any demand.

These might actually sell pretty well. Easy install?

Install

I will do mine on Saturday and post a set of instructions.

You'll need to open the control panel for the sunroof, find four wires and make the connections. The kit I am offering will include a connector with pigtails to tie into the existing wiring. From there put everything back together.

Thanks for asking.

I'm in if the installation is easy and comes with clean wire connections.

Update - 1/18

OK, I spent the better part of my morning on Saturday doing some testing. My car is equipped with the UGDO / Compass mirror, so I had to figure out which wires were connected to the LED. Not an easy task. I ended up disassembling the mirror to figure it out. Once that was complete, I was on my way until I hit snag number 2.

IN the original DIY, it stated that there was a wire that was 0V (or drawn to 0V) when the car was turned on, but then went to 12V when the car was off. I could not find this wire. I traced every wire in all the harnesses in this unit with no luck. Maybe the wiring has changed since the original post.

Anyway, what I did locate were two wires which can be used. The first wire is constant with 12V, irregardless if the ignition is on or off. The second wire is switched by the ignition. It is 12V when the car is on and 0V when the car is off.

This makes the connection works as well, but means I need to add an extra relay to my circuit. I made one and bench tested it successfully Saturday night.

So I have gone back and ordered the parts I need to convert the prototype to a PCB version that will look cleaner. That will happen later this week.

Hopefully next Saturday it will be installed and blinking away.

I will keep everyone posted.

The wire goes to LED is pin 8 (+) and 9 (-) from the plug into the mirror.
My mod was just use a pin plug push into the jack from the back and wire to the sunroof control area.

Thanks for the note on the wires. Wish I would have known that Saturday.

We're you able to find a wire that was 12V when the car was off, and <5V when it was on?
