Shopping in and around LA
Hoping members can direct me with some good shopping for the wife and myself while in LA. We are staying in the Westwood area. Is Desert Hills worth the hours drive to check-out? Cheers! AK
PS. A friend recommended a restaurant called Fogo de Chao, is it good food? |

in beverly hills you have saks fifth avenue, neiman marcus, and barney's right next to each other (rodeo is just across the street) and tons of other high end shops... century city mall is a skip and a hop from westwood, it's a nice outdoor mall, with some good restaurants and food courts... think an outdoor more glamorous pacific center / robson street for you canucks... melrose is also nice shopping... it all depends on specifically what you are looking for... PM me and i can give you a hand, i live in the area... ps - desert hills will take you longer than an hour... welcome to LA traffic... and no, it's not worth the drive... pps - please bring me a bag of ketchup chips... i will guide you in all the right places... we americans do not believe in ketchup chips, it's a shame... |

Thanks for the quick response. Thanks for the analogy to Robson street, puts it in perspective. Ketchup chips! Aw man its my favorite too! (Must be a learned response but damn I'm salivating just thinking that) Lol! The wife wants the LA experience so that's why we decided on staying at the W. Trying to make sure we only drive by Rodeo Drive though, telling her its only for movie stars that make appointment with the stores, can you go in there! Whether she'll believe that will be another story. Lol!

Driving an 1 1/2-2 hours for an outlet mall is very overrated. Plus, there are outlet malls that are closer to Westwood anyways like Camarillo or Lake Elsinore. I would only go to Cabazon (which is the town where the outlets are located, and what we call the "Desert Hills Outlets") if you are already planning on going to Palm Springs or going to the Morongo Casino, which is adjacent to the outlets.
For the LA shopping experience I would check out Melrose Ave. for the boutique type experience, then hit a mall like the Beverly Center. I would consider traveling down to South Coast Plaza in Orange County as well. You should check out Rodeo Drive, even if you're not going to buy anything. |

+1 for the camarillo outlets...
stop by the topanga cayon westfeild mall on your way back from camarillo as well in woodland hills.. perhaps grab a bite to eat at roy's or flemmings (it's right across the street from the mall)

If you come up to Camarillo outlets, PM me and maybe we could do dinner local. Or just hit the In-N-Out on the way back to the freeway like all the other shoppers

Fogo de Chao is Brazilian BBQ. It's more about quantity than quality. If you want steak, go to Wolfgang's, CUT, or Mastro's. They are all in Beverly Hills and are nicer.

Are you looking for designer/upscale shopping or more like outlets?
Melrose is definitely good for boutique style stops. If you want indoor malls, there Century City and Beverly Center which are close to Westwood. 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica is an outdoor mall. It's also right next to the beach. Paseo Colorado in Pasadena is a bit more of a drive.

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming! Looking for designer stuff, more unique to LA but not necessarily the super upscale cost you an arm and a leg variety, those are easy to spot and checkout. Any cool places to get good deals and selection (you know where the locals shop) How's the Nordstrom rack in the area?
