335i CTY HWY = 17 / 26 (Per fueleconomy.com)
335d CTY HWY = 23 / 33

Diesel (in my area): 4.89/gal
Gas (Prem): 4.32/gal
Gas (Reg): 4.02/gal

Depending on final pricing diesel might be better deal.

To avoid confusion, maybe we should use US gallons in THIS thread.

Using US gallons the 335d averaged 35.1 mpg in the EU combined cycle, and 44.4 mpg @ ~55mph cruising

There are a couple of fuel consumption calculatios in this thread. Here is mine based on what I see as more real world numbers.

Here is what I came up with.

$4.45 for Premium (Lowest price in my area)
$4.95 for Diesel (Lowest price in my area)
35MPG for 335d (What I believe I can get knowing how to drive a diesel for mileage)
25MPG ave for 335i (On the high side but for easier calculation)

$4.45/25 = $0.178 per mile for 335i
$4.95/37 = $0.144 per mile for 335d
$0.178 - $0.144 = $0.034 more expensive per mile to drive 335i
$2000(Cost premium of 335d over 335i)/$0.034 = 58,823 miles to recoup uplift

This is a purely self motivated calculation based on my driving on ave 2k a month for my job, mostly highway miles. I've owned diesels in the past and it is pretty easy to get better than stated mileage. Also, diesels are super easy to mod for mileage and/or power.

I for one am looking forward to 335d. As long as diesel is less than 30% more than premium the uplift will eventually be recouped and there will be ROI.

From the newly released PDF file attachment, the 335d compression ratio is 17.0 to 1, compared with the 335i's 10.2 to 1. This makes sense, because diesel engines require higher compression to ignite the fuel (as opposed to using the spark from a plug as in non-diesel petroleum engines).

Additionally, the bore/stroke of the 335d is reportedly 90/84 displacing 2993 cc and the 335i's 89.6/84 displacing 2979 cc.

This in large part explains the torque difference.

I was just comparing the 330d (manual) numbers to the 335d (from today's press release). i just gotta say DAY-UM!!!!

HP: 330d- 245@4k, 335d- 286@4400
Torque: 330d- 384 lb-ft from 1750 to 3000, 335d- 428 from 1750 to 2250
0-100kmh: 330d (manual)- 6.1 sec, 335d (auto only)- 6.0
top spd: 250kmh on both (electronically limited)
EU Fuel economy (converted to US mpg ):
330d- 32.2 urban, 49 extra-urban, 41.3 combined
335d- 25.8 urban, 44.4 extra-urban, 35.1 combined

the new 330d outperforms the 325d on fuel economy in the city, and matches its combined numbers, and outperforms by a considerable margin performance wise.

Note that all 3 of the 6 cylinder diesel engines have the same displacement.

If I am not wrong, the fact that the X5 is way heavy makes all the difference between the two motors. The gasoline feels anemic in the SUV. The diesel with all that extra torque will be noticeably better. Like huge difference better. In the car, the extra torque wont be nearly as noticeable as it is in the big lumbering SUV. The E9X is kind of light, so even the 335i stock is almost on the edge of what the wheels can handle you really get on it. Throw in the 335d motor, and I am sure the torque makes a difference to a point, but the past that point, it just results in wheel spin. In the SUV, it makes real difference because of the extra weight.

My tuned 335i has as much torque as the diesel. I notice its punchier than stock, but I can't tell at what point the extra torque goes to waste as it is so easy to start spinning if you realkly get on it, and once you are spining, you wont feel any extra torque you pile on past that point. So the results wont seem as dramatic as in a vehicle likean X5 where even with the 428tq, I suspect you are nowhere near the limits of the wheels ability to take it. That thing is heavy so you will use every pound of that torque and feel the entire difference as opposed to the car where you probably use only half the extra torque before the tires start giving up and you can't feel the rest of it. Just my opinion. What do you guys think?

On a funny note, I drove the new ML350 with the older V8 at the Mercedes launch event before the 335 came out and liked it so much I almost got one. I felt it put the X5 to shame. It really did. The new X5 though gets it back. I felt the SUV had almost leveled the field with cars and the damn airmatic suspension in the ML is something else. So comfortable and literally glides on rough pavement yet doesn't wobble and roll like a boat on the curves. But then along came the 335 and the game was raised 10 fold. I can't even imagine getting an SUV over this car.
