330i Problem with idle

Hey guys,

I have a 06 330i e90 with 95k. I've been noticing an issue recently. During normal driving, when i stop (for example at a red light) my car will sputter/shake for an instant and go back to a normal idle. Sometimes it happens more than once. The car will sputter, go back to normal for a bit and sputter again. This sputter nonsense is difficult to explain, but if this happened to anyone before please help me out, thanks!

EDIT 8/2012: This sputtering has become worse! My passengers begin to ask me questions and everything. The best way to describe the sputtering is that the sensation is similar to when you shift from N to D. I'm suspicious that it is the injectors. Every time i run a fuel injector cleaner (Techron Concentrate) the problem goes away temporarily until i put in the next tank of gas (after the tank with the cleaner). Any thoughts on this? I'm going to ordering the injectors soon hopefully if i get more confidence that this is the issue.

I've had this issue too. It seems to me that it might just be due to the cold as I've only experienced it during the winter time.

I've got a 08 328xi and the rpm has been fluctuating up/down and sputter/shake during idle but that generally goes away after the car warms up. Wondering if anybody has experienced that

swap solenoids after cleaning and try cleaning MAF with Maf cleaner aswell. look of anything loose that might have created a vacuum leak.

I agree about the vanos solenoids. Clean them and swap them. I dont have idle issues but I have been wanted to do this as preventive maintenance. I ve heard that it helps to get an even smoother idling when swaping vanos. Also I would buy one of those chevron injector cleaners if I were you. I bought one along with the air filter and mine is smoother now. I cant imagine if i clean the vanos and change plugs it will like new again... looking forward to do this soon...keep us posted

soo im realizing a few things now. I just had my battery replaced this last winter cuz the last one was completely done. Since i had the bad battery do you think that it so much pressure on my coils/plugs that i need to get the plugs changed again? i never changed the coils so maybe that might be the issue? just brainstorming here what do you guys think?

btw im not too sure what the vanos solenoid is or does but i wouldnt mind trying to clean them. i just want this problem fixed!!!

My car had this... I tried Everything... Come to find out i now only use Shell gas and it seems to be fixed. I think the car doesnt like the Ethanol. Since switching the car hardly ever does it.

This is an issue with me too. It happens at random times although it happens to me like once a day after the engine has warmed up and I am at a complete stop. I am in texas and right now the temps have been almost to 110 degrees.
I've been running with a P0456 engine code (it's not the gas cap) so I was thinking that it could be related since I have evap issues.

I do have an aftermarket intake. AFE. with RPI's

Although this is a concern, my biggest concern is passing inspection! lol

i too have had the same surge in rpm's when im at a complete stop. i though it could be the spark plugs, ignition coil going bad, or since reading here the vanos solenoids. i think i will change out the plugs first and go from there.

This could also be caused by a MAF thats dirty or failing, or an air leak downstream of the MAF.

I been having the same issue that started happening as soon my first coil went out 98k.

Replaced all new coils/plugs/ cleaned MAF, cleaned and swapped vanos solenoids, new air filter, redline fuel injector cleaner 3 times, still does it.

Seems to do it much less when its really hot, or when the AC is off.

Took it to the M shop they replaced the camshaft position sensor, need to get the car's codes read again to see if its throwing any more codes.

Im thinking its a sensor, mabye I need to replace a solenoid, or vacuum leak.

I've had this happen before, it was the mass airflow sensor in the intake, cleaned it and all was well...so it looks like you tried cleaning it and no dice...
