Software

Dear all,

many thanks for sharing your experiences about the exhaust sound after PPK installation. Still it is not entirely clear as the PE's in the U.S. do not have an exhaust flap at all to my knowledge? So sound-wise there should not be a big change anyway for U.S.-owners (except the "burble").

Another issue: As my car runs out of warranty very soon I am thinking about doing a software update (my car is built in Sept. 2010, don't know if it was updated at any point in time since then).

However: as the PPK obviously includes a software change I wonder if this includes an entire update of the whole system software? As far as I understand it correctly, when updating, always the entire car software is updated (not components separately)?

Many thanks and best,

Fabian

PS: just to introduce my car briefly: It's an 335i x-Drive Coupe, Azurite-Black, 09/2010, LCI. Everything stock except PE, 19" 269 Performance wheels and Performance Carbon Front splitter

Hmm... I've got a 2011 335i w/sport package if that matters any
Does this mean I've already got the pre-ball-snipped sound? And if so, does that mean if I were to get the PPK1 or 2, that my exhaust wouldn't sound any 'throatier' after the upgrade? Or better yet, could one of you advise me on how to check for this?

If you had a software update on your car, the gurgling isn't there any more...

When I had my PPK S1 it was in June of 2011... I order my e90 335 with the MSport package... The sound difference was slightly noticeable... A little rougher and with more cracking noise. The software upgrade did not have a negative affect on the sound from the exhaust.

I did not have pops nor gurgles on my 2011 e90 UNTIL I had the Stage 2 PPK installed, then I had them aplenty.

I had my PPK 1 installed last week. It took 3-4 days of driving before I heard it. Now it has it. Cannot really hear it inside the car. But when I park and open the door, I can readily hear it.

Be prepared for it taking all day and getting a fun loaner meanwhile, lol. Make sure--make double sure and verify on your own--that they order the PPK according to your exact VIN. If just one digit is off, your car will not take the upgrade and they will have to re-order everything.

Lastly, talk to some of the parts guys at the dealer. They may hook you up with a discount like they did me ($680). Bring up the fact that it used to cost $500 when released at first.
Very, very nice write up bro. Been looking to this to my mine aswell. I got a quote for $704.08 plus $167 for labor at my local bmw dealer. What you think? I know its been 2 years now since your upgrade. How is it holding up?

Labor cost

Here in NorCal.labor rate is $215 hr... My labor was $323 to install.. I was told that was because the whole car needed recoding.. Had to take back to dealer next day because I had some malfunction codes appear.

I was very interested at first too but when I saw the prices BMW charges for labor I skipped the PPK and went straight to COBB.

Got an AP V2 for $400, running Stage1+FMIC and will never go back. The only thing I will do is spend $295 to get a PTF custom tune to optimize for my current setup. But still cheaper than PPK software + install.

And for the PE, I don't have one but I unhooked the vacuum line of the exhaust valve and it's pretty loud already. Does the PE add HP/TQ too?

I have the PE and from what I've read on here is that the gains are minimal at best and it's more of an aesthetic mod for the noise.

did you notice any power increase? I just got mine installed last week and i've driven it for at least 200 or so miles now and don't really feel any difference.

I guess this question goes to all of the other people on this thread (with 6AT) who also got the PPK on their car...what mode do you drive your car in when you notice the power difference? I always drove my car in sport-manual and shift on my own (its a stupid tendency i developed from when i had an e92 with 6MT and so always felt the need to shift with an AT). I can obviously feel a huge surge of power if i drive it in DS mode but i never did a baseline test or dyno prior to getting the tune hence i really can't tell/feel the difference. the only thing i noticed was the gurgle and popping sounds but that's only when i drive with the windows down. i'm actually considering telling my stealership to take the "tune" off give me a refund.

I had the PPK, but after upgrading my suspension I wanted more power. Got the Cobb AP with a custom PTF tune - The Cobb Stage 1 Sport tune was about the same as the PPK, but with the custom tune from PTF the car has way more power than the PPK, and it is easy to revert the tune to stock if you have to take it in to the dealer for service. I agree with the others who said skip the PPK, look up Pro Tuning Freaks and buy the Cobb from them!!!

BMW claims 5hp, I believe. It also weighs a good bit less than the regular exhaust.
