Checking DPF Regeneration

Hi Guys,

Little unsure if my DPF is regenerating. How can i check this? I've got DIS v57, but i'm unsure how i can use this software to test.

Any help would be great, at the moment i dont seem to have any issues, i just want to make sure it's working. My exhaust is squaky clean and im not sure if this is good or bad.

thanks
G.

If you get hold of Torque Pro app plus a bluetooth obd reader off amazon, then you can monitor the cat sensor bank 1. Mine every 400 miles or so shoots up to over 600c for about 10 mins or so. In the app, you can set an alarm to trigger say when the cat sensor goes over 500c, then you will know when a regen is happening. Get to a motorway and try to hold it constant speed for the duration of the regen

Hope this helps, shame these manufacturers cant advise their customers via idrive or something when a regen is happening, save us having to resort to mobile phone apps!!

Think its available for both android and iphone

Thanks, i'll look at that. I've just found a post which showed me how to do it in DIS.

it was showing -5800 since last regen. I'm going to put it on tomorrow when i drive to work and it will hopefully show when live.

i think i can get all the info now with DIS v57. I'm going to try that on the way to work and see if it gives live data.

Cheers.

I used the software on the way to work this morning and it didn't regen and i do around 20 miles on the motorway.

When i checked yesterday it was saying -5000 meters since last regen, now it is up to 29312. I'll check this on the way home and see if it starts. the Exhaust gas got up to 350'c but never started.

Anyone know how often this should regenerate?

if it says "regeneration requested in DDE" I would expect it to start a regen asap. I also think the distance is wrong for some reason, the same on mine. I just checked mine with BavTech, it says:
distance since last regen: 9.0 km
fuel used since last regen: 34.11ltrs
soot in PDF: 13.84 gr.

Haven't driven this morning, did 150km last night, and it did not regen then as I monitor it thru an OBD monitor with alarm LEDs. Impossible to miss those LEDs at night. The fuel used indicates 610km since last regen, and that matches my odometer reading (590) which I typically reset when a regen occurs. I get 600-1100km (the shorter with in town driving, the higher with daily one way 30 mile, or more, motorway at 80-90 mph

What OBD monitor and software are you using for this information?

I'll keep monitoring with the above, but i'll need to get a solution like yourself or badgerbrock72 use. Something easier, than having my laptop!

the software is Bavarian Technics, with their cable

the OBD reader is http://www.auterraweb.com/dashdynoseries.html. I've have this since 07, I cut open the ashtray, so it now flips up and down with the ashtray cover to be out of sight. Will cost me a new ashtray to restore.

Today the android app seems a very cost effective solution. Could you get a cheap android phone, with maybe just a pay&go card, and use it for this app only?

Other than temps.. you'll be aware when a regeneration is happening just through driving. Goes quite lumpy and unresponsive for 5-10 minutes.

I get a regen every month or so, seems odd that yours goes so long without doing it.

I was going to say have you checked coolant temps, but it says 92.9deg, so optimum.

the android app is superb tried it today as car was at dealers for oil level sensor (damm error code vanished off the car ecu so couldnt be fixed under warranty)

Anyhow on way back the temps shot up past 400 and hit 500 and as had windows down you could catch fain smell of regen.

Never finished as it was a short drive but off to bournemouth on Sat so swill stay out of 6th gear and watch the temps

I have Torque Pro & like Badgerbrock72 have it set to alarm when regen occurs. I don't use it all the time but have seen a number of regen's but, unlike PhilM I've been unable to detect any change in the way the car feels or drives. What I have noticed is that regen's can start at any old time, even when driving round town, which can be very annoying, yet I've spent hours on the motorway & not seen any sign of one, it's a shame they can't be started manually

agreed - its a real shame BMW dont allow the driver to request one through, say the hidden menu's. I can spent all day on the motorway and if its not ready, it wont regen, then pop down the road in town the next day and off it goes. Then a mad panic to get to the nearest dual-carrigeway, if your'e lucky before it finishes!!

anyway for a cost-effective way of monitoring the regen's the Torque Pro app is best, just a pain having to remember to set the phone up every journey

BTW for anyone using Torque, dont forget to quit the app when not driving, it EATS battery on my Samsung Galaxy S2 so assume it would on any phone.

Tell me about it, it's a real pita sitting at the lights holding revs at 2k & praying that regen doesn't terminate prematurely

It should not need a dual carriage way or motorway to regen, the ecu should be able to complete a regen even around town provided its not turned off part way through! If you can force a regen stationary which when an engine is revved stationary it produces very little torque/power to create heat it should easily manage one around town! That is why engines have throttle valves to help the regen proceedure complete

As above..

If you're driving round town it won't stop the regen, but I've noticed to get them out the way quickly you need to be putting it through load.. I never really go far so whenever it starts I head from the back roads onto the local bypass and shoot up and down it through a sequence of roundabouts using around half throttle. 5 minutes later it's finished. Steady throttle on a motorway isn't really ideal as it's hardly working the engine.

When you get home it will be ticking a lot on cool down as it's got so hot.

Garage List
Agree with PhilM.

Mine usually start when driving around town. The tell tale signs for me are the engine sounding lumpy and the auto box hanging on to lower gears and not changing up (to keep the revs high).

Sometimes it has started and I haven't had time to let it finish - it just starts off again on the next journey (once the coolant temp has risen).

I get them up to once a week (I am town driving 90% of the time) but usually once every 2 - 3 weeks.
