Took it to the dealer for wastegate rattle under warranty. One turbo was completely replaced and just the actuator got changed out on the other one.
Yep, see if you can make the sound by doing fast revs to 3k in nuetral. This is easy to demonstrate for the dealer in the parking lot so they cant try and say its "normal" or mysteriously the techs cant hear any noise like happened to me before.

If you can replicate the sound every time then ask to take a tech for a ride so you can show them the noise. Nothing worse then getting a call from the dealer trying to tell you there's nothing wrong with the car and they couldn't get it to make any noises.

Wow... this whole time I thought it was just my piece of shit car when it happens. Mine only happens exactly at 2k rpm pretty much. Always here a solid rattle underneath my car but more towards where the midpips are on my exhaust.
Very frustrating and I hate it cause it makes it sounds like shit for that 1-2 secs!

yes it is the waste gates. I had the issue and installing the DP made it so much louder. Thank God the shop owner was like that is unacceptable and was able to fix the issues by using an e clip. Two years later, still no noise back, me a happy camper :-)

I get that noise when letting off the gas from like 3000 rpm and down.....also when i let my car coast down the parking garage ramps you can really here it. Freakin annoying as it sounds terrible and it happens when my car burbles.

same problem here. screwing with wastegate position helped it somewhat, but it's still there.
i don't forsee a cheap/easy fix you could try physically adjusting the actuator rod, but that's only good for the rear turbo |

Also maybe some bmw techs could chime in on this one, i got a buddy that just started last week working as a tech at my local bmw dealer. I also have my friend jennifer that is a svc advisor at the same dealer. Whats the chances i could go in there, have the turbos replaced (again smh, getting horrible wg rattle) and between the tech and advisor they can "overlook" the dp's,tune, and fmic?

it should really take them about one hour to fix if they can reach the turbo from underneath the car. Depends which turbo is causing the issue, they have fairly easy access to one turbo from under the car. details in the link below. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=541370 good luck!!! :-)
