Idea for LSD retrofitting...Plausible???? Experts please chime in! :)
So I'm in the market for an LSD...however, I have an 08 and a welded ring gear.
LSD Package prices for Bolted Ring are ~$1200 or so, whereas LSD packages with welded ring gear equal ~$2100. Here's my thought. Would we be able to purchase the ring gear and whatever else is necessary to 'convert' our welded differential to a bolted differential? I couldn't find the inner parts on REALOEM or GETBMWPARTS...so I'm thinking the dealer is the only option.. Then do the companies machine off our ring gear of the core that you'd send in? Or am I just way out of the loop and the LSD packages for welded diffs include the parts to convert the diff to bolted.??? Thanks in advance for the Knowledge Transfer! |

www.diffsonline.com sells the 3.46 ratio ring gear. You can buy that and then your LSD. Bolt the 2 pieces together and you have a bolted LSD. I haven't found a place to sell 3.08 ring gears but diffsonline might.

I've been trying to call them for a few weeks now. They must be really backed up.

Thanks for the replies! I am happy this might be possible! Now hopefully the stupid ring and other parts don't cost $900--the difference in diffs to begin with..haha

All 335i models built up to 3/2007 have bolted differential
335i with M/T built after 3/2007 have welded differential 335i with A/T built between 3/2007 and 9/2007 have welded differential All 335i A/T built after 9/2007 have bolted differential Might want to check this thread. Wavetrac Differentials vs. Quaife ATB Differential for RWD 335i There are few other similar ones and reviews, but you'll need to . GL...

Yes, Harold can produce one for you. The price is higher, much higher I think. For Quaife, what I saw was $2200 + $800 core charge for 3.08 (quaife), but this recently went up (price changed 5/11) to $2588 + $1000 core charge.
If you go to 3.46 gears then there is no core, you pay $3600 an keep you original diff. This may have changed but this is where I came up with that info: 3.46 for manual trans: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=282877 3.08: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=365276 So with 3.08 you can pay $2600 + shipping after you send your core back in. I got the 3.08 and it's being installed next week (can't wait). Wavetrac is probably different pricing, but after Former_Boosteds review, I chose Quaife. |

Right...and I'm trying to avoid that much higher cost by buying the bolted ring gear for considerably less than the $1400 price bump.
No answer at Diffsonline for me today.. |
