Stupid question but which one should we buy for the N54 engine? 5-30 or 5-40?

There won't be any harm using 5w40 though. If anything the 40 will protect your engine even more so.

Yeah exactly, either one will be fine! (if they sell out of 5W30 grab the 5W-40!)

Yes correct, and the remaining 3.5L comes in handy for top ups (some N54's don't mind a drink of oil over the 7500km interval you should be changing the oil at)

It's quite normal to use a litre or so of oil in a tuned turbocharged car (and it seems most euro's like a drink of oil every now and again!)

5W-30 is the most commonly used grade of oil for all manufacturers these days as the reccomended factory fill.

Go to the castrol website and use their vehicle finder feature (but I'm 99.9% sure yours would be 5W30!)

a little bird told me that next year bmw will be teaming up with shell and castrol is shown the door. guess we'll have to wait till next year to see if this is true. this oil isn't technically a full synthetic oil. im having trouble picking an oil that i want to stick with, dont want to be changing brands each oil change to avoid wrecking seals etc. can anyone recommend anything else??? ive been told martini racing and motul are the ones to go for thoughts ??

Won't ruin the engine, but manufacturers recommend that if you're going to 'mix' oils to ensure its from the same manufacturer (i.e castrol 0W40 to castrol 5W30)

Each manufacturer have slightly different formulations, thus they behave differently.

I was a bit of a guts and bought 6 (I have 3 cars and my family have 6 cars that I service) and there weren't many left!!

If you find that they're sold out of 5W30 and SCA only have 5w40, you can use that also as it's bmw LL01 approved (looking at the PDS's for both there is bugger all difference really between the 5W30 and the 5W40)
