For that money, it'd be an M6 for me everyday of the week.

OK, so the gearbox will piss you off after a few months and you're looking at a slower iDrive version but in every other respect my experience of the M6 was of a much better car than the M3. Not as agile but hardly a boat and the performance makes up for it anyway.

It'll cost about 25% more in fuel but over 10k miles thats an extra £700 or so...hardly the end of the world when the performance is real supercar (I still reckon at 100mph+, this car is quicker than my Turbo).

And when the gearbox pisses you off (it won't at first...but after 6 months it may do) you simply sell it. No change there then

Here's a few decent mileage ones to get you started....

Indy (negotiate to £26k):
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2393455.htm

Private (negotiate to £30k):
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2503008.htm

Stealer (negotiate to £30k):
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2418509.htm

Best value (super?)car on the road in my opinion - yes, M5's are cheaper but these are bit more unique and don't ever believe that an M5 is as fast...they're not.

The M6 is a lot lighter and more aerodynamic and mine went straight past an M5 (which was on full throttle) on the relatively short straight at Croft.

The M6 is hardly a looker. But that's a serious amount of car for £26k and there's less of them on the road.

I always see a red M3 when driving to work, it does stand out and the black roof suits the colour well.

The only issue with 6'ers is the rear cabin space - ok if you don't ferry adults around much (or just kids) - For that price tho - what a steal!

is the Red Cog of Death really as common as you read everywhere? That would be the only thing putting me off an M6, that and no AUC warranty.

Yeah, if you were going down the M6 route, I'd no doubt get one from a dealer. The extra cost for the warranty and support would be invaluble (and could save in the long-term; even if you only keep it 6 months ).

You're hardly slumming it in an M3 though .

M6 is attractive. If you check Pistonheads (I can't be arsed) there is a 2006 car with 3800 miles for £36,000. Yes, thats 3800 miles.

If I had 5 other cars and had 'forgotten' to buy an M6 for £80k new, that'd be the one I went for. As it happens, I will probably be looking for something with more like 20k.... I might test drive an M6 now though.

AUC is definitely preferred on either M car.

Matt,

That is the garage I sold my Cayman to, they only ever deal in really mint cars and are very good to deal with.

If you speak to them say that you know of a couple of people that have used them (Scott, white Cayman 2.9) and Jack (Yellow Cayman 2.7 traded in an S5) They like to look after peopel who they have dealt with before.

I would buy a car off them.

That M6 seems incredible value for money.

I've seen 2007 335i's/D's for slightly less and with more miles.

Looks like a steal to me

That's coz the gearboxes are Pants Ian, to quote the workshop foreman of a dealer who had one for sale "walk away Del, they're more trouble than they're worth"

I'm not au fait with M6's Del, although I have heard about the boxes.

I guess it's like all high end motor's, as long as you have AUC warranty and it's an itch, scratch it

Valid point Ian, but the one RK's planning on looking at isn't AUC and that would put me off TBH

Matt
I was going to suggest that one Matt but thought you might not like the colour (not sure why I thought that).

Good on you mate... I hope you like it! Make sure you get a nice stretch of road, bang it in 3rd, 5k rpm and floor it.....just feel your insides go all gooey for a second

Some fail, MOST DON'T

M6 will be far more reliable than a 335i

Also there is nothing between an M5 & M6 performance wise!

I'm not going to pluck hairs over 000.1 of a second to be honest. The M6 is a nice looking car, the M5 is too (to be fair) but much less so. All in my opinion of course.

Andrew you're right. I don't LOVE the colour, but sometimes you need to look at what is available and make a decision based on the overall package. I think it's the best mileage/age/spec combo for the price and I bet the inside is lovely.

I think the out/interior colours hint more at luxury than sport which (along with where the garage is) could suggest a mature and loving (probably well off) owner. This along with the comments above from Scott are promising.

We'll see how it goes..

Oh and in respect of the gearbox... Well people tell me the VW DSG box is wank and fails often... Mine runs a million bhp and feels fucking awesome. Compared to the old slushy 335d it's an absolute revelation....

I suppose it's horses for courses. I also bet in the current hard economic climate I could get Scotthall BMW to offer me an extended warranty depending on what the servicing etc has been like.

I disagree....

...of course, I'm only speaking as I found when comparing mine directly with one (the owner of which was little peeved as mine was standard and his M5 was modded to the hilt with exhaust, map, ram intake etc....maybe all that had a detrimental effect on his cars performance)

Maybe he could not drive, maybe his was down on power!

There is not much in it regarding straightline performance. Sometimes a smidge either way!

Soooo Matt what did you decide on in the end? I'd have the M3 but the M6's are a nice piece of kit-bit too bulky for me hence I went for the M3. either way you would be getting a very nice little beastie!
