Servicing Q

This has been an age old question question of main dealer vs independant where to get your car serviced. I am at the crossroads of which route to go down and just wanted to get views of fellow members

My car is a 2008 and is on 112k miles and has had full BMW SH. I tend to change my oil/filers every 10k or yearly whichever comes first. In my SH the last log was at 78k miles about year and half ago where it had a major 3rd oil service done (oil/oil filter/air/microfilters)

I have BMW extended warranty on mine and terms now state I can get my car serviced by a VAT reg garage who uses genuine parts.

I rang my dealer that I use and quoted me £381.65 for 3rd oil service (oil/oil filter/fuel/air/microfilters)

My vehicle check is also due which is additinal £97.75 so in total £479.74

Now I have priced genuine parts up and not sure how much my local independant would charge (need to give him a ring tommorow)

Oil Filter £16.94 inc VAT
Fuel Filter £39.16 inc VAT
Air Filter £46.66 inc VAT
Micro Filter £36.90 inc VAT
Oil 5w 30 (£60 inc VAT)

Total for parts only - £199.66
Vehicle check - not sure how much my indi would charge
Labour? - again not sure

. I am pretty sure of my independant compentacy as I have used him before

So which route would you go for?

Are the main dealers giving you the 4years discount for that price?
Mine has quoted £291 for 3rd service including the 4yr+ discount ,local specialist quoted about £40 less so didn't think that was a bad quote for main bmw garage

I paid £360 for this at a main dealer last month. Another member here paid only £280 I think, he bought and supplied parts or did some stuff himself.

As long as its OEM parts I don't see the issue, it won't affect your resale value at that mileage. In fact I value a decent Indy more than a main dealer.

Save yourself a few quid and spend it on something new for the car!

Not sure your indi price is that cheap if you need to supply all parts.

I would do jobs like microfilter and airfilter yourself, buy from ECP and fit in mins.

I recently had my third oil service at dealer, 4 yrs + oil service was £139, also got them to do the fuel filter which was £78 fitted. The rest I will do myself.

Vehicle check is a bit of a waste of time, if you look around your tyres, suspension etc you will already have done most of what the dealer do. Simple to reset the service schedule for this item if you do it yourself.

Even with extended warranty there is no issue with replacing things like microfilter and air filter yourself, guess you need to use the genuine parts to keep the warranty sweet.

In terms of costs, I guess if you look at my oil service at £139, you are buying oil and filter for nearly £80 so its £60 labour with my dealer. Guess the indi may be a bit cheaper but not loads. Again fuel filter, I paid £78, your part cost is £39 so my dealer charged £39 fitting. Don't see an Indi charging a load less for this item.

Given you have full BMW S'H to date if it was me I would keep it that way. Also BMW goodwill payments are much easier to achieve if you have a full s/h with BMW as that shows your loyalty and you have lined their pockets along the way. Recently I had a part replaced on my X5, cost £200, without even me asking my dealer approached BMW who agreed to pay 50% of the costs. Car is outside of warranty and I chose not to extend warranty on it therefore they could have told me where to go.

Thanks Davy, makes sense now as to replace the micro filter and air filter myself as I know that can be replaced in 5 minutes.
What I have done is ordered all the filters under 1 invoice so will keep it attached to the service history.

I will ring up the dealer again tommorow asking for a price on oil and fuel filter change and replace the micro and air filter myself.

Have dealers started using 0w 30 oil now?

Just make sure you get the 4 plus service price of oil change for 139. That's a nationwide offer as far as I'm aware.

My dealer has left me a message saying they can do the oil and fuel filter change and vehicle check with me supplying both filters for £250

I will do the micro filter and air filter myself and leave the receipt in the SH

That doesn't sound too far away from what it should be. worth noting they will probably carry out the vehicle check whether you pay for it or not as its generally a means for them to identify other work you may like them to carry out. My dealer certainly did this without any charge and also thankfully nothing needing work was found.

Booked into Rybrook Warwick as the price was not too far off what my indi quoted, again great CS from them which takes my custom back to them

Microfilter and the air filter I will replace myself and keep the reciept should it be needed for warranty.

I do feel a bit bad not supporting my local indi but I did in the back of my mind thought £120 for labour to change oil, fuel, air and pollen filter and thats me supplying the parts
