Cooler and denser air means that it takes more energy to heat up and auto-detonate.

At least, this is how I would explain it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

larger turbine's = more air being moved at the same boost level = more power.

same reason a s52 w a gt35r can hit over 500whp on pump gas where a 60-1 will only get around 420-430whp.

I think there's more to it.

Here's what I was thinking :

If the intake tract holds boost, it has compressed air stored inside.

This compressed air decompresses into the cylinders on an intake stroke.

The compressor just has to maintain the pressure in the intake.

More compressor flow will mean that the pressure drop caused by every intake stroke will be replaced quicker.

(And a throttle body spacer means that the pressure drops less each intake stroke)

But ultimately, if the pressure is maintained and restored in between intake strokes, performance should be very similar.

The bottom of the stroke will have less pressure than the top, so if the larger compressor is replacing air faster, the bottom-stroke pressure should be higher, meaning more air can rush in before the intake valve closes.

When it comes to race vs regular gas, I think the cooler temps are what allows you to make the power on regular.
