the older bmw's with the belt driven water pumps had plastic impellers that would break and that's why they went bad - what are ours made of?

A lot of makes, including Honda (B18 series), call for water pump, thermo, and t-belt at 105-120K. That said, I'll probably do my water pump at 90-100K (with coolant every 30K or 2 years).

Let us know how you do with the t-belt replacement. I suggest you do a DIY for us!

It's called the engine (accessory) drive belt. It powers the air conditioning compressor, alternator, and power steering pump. It does not drive the camshalfs.

In the first case, I agree with you (you don't have to bother I guess at 135K).

In the second case, I prefer to pay upfront and avoid an emergency repair. 60K miles is probably a bit too early.

the statistic is hard to assess.
My car just started overheating last night while 50m away from home. From reading all of the posts here, I can only guess that it is the water pump. Going to have it serviced right next to where I had to leave it in Milwaukee...

To add to your stats, mine went out with 144k miles on it.

I love my car though - have not had any major repairs done since I bought it in 2010 but in this last year, I have noticed a loud rumbling idle sound when the engine warms up and idles under 500rpm. I was told by one repair shop that it could be the alternator bearings but my dealership thinks that it is most likely an old timing chain... Anyone have any experience with this?

My water pump/thermostat on my 2011 335 xdrive went at 76.5K and I've had my car 4 years and 7 weeks (out of warranty). I suspect that this would have showed up earlier since we had a pretty cold winter here in Canada and this surfaced once the weather warmed up. After endless arguing with the dealership and BMW NA - they are unwilling to cover the costs of parts/repair.

I will never buy another BMW!

2007 N54 335i Coupe 121,000 miles - Had the amber engine temp light and then is went red shortly after that. I shut the car down and let it cool for 1 hour. Re-started the car and noticed the cooling fan was running at full speed. This was during start-up with engine cool. I drove it home about 4 miles and the same light amber then red light came on followed by limp mode. Let is cool again for 1 hr and got it home to my garage. Replaced the electric water pump, thermostat, inner connect hose and used new bolts on the water pump housing to engine block. I refilled with approx 1.5 gal of BMW coolant with 50/50 mix coolant to distilled water. The parts and coolant cost $750 at the dealership. I installed them myself. It took approx 5 hrs taking my time and changing the oil while I had the car on jacks. One tip - for the top bolt on the water pump to engine block I used a 3/8" snap-on 1/4" drive swivel with a long extension. This worked better than the 3/8 drive with universal and torx socket. At 121K miles I guess I was lucky the water pump lasted that long. Drove the car 40 miles this morning an she is fixed.

Water pumps are mechanical items that eventually fail. My only bitch is the cost of the parts... That was the most expensive water pump I have ever replaced! I will always drive a BMW and never own another car. There are no other cars. I will put another 60K miles on this one... Saving for an M4!
