It does seem the pressure is growing as all in line fall on their sword.

Lets see what half 2 brings....

Me too. Are you sure you don't mean 16/1 that he'll resign?

That's what I thought. The OP said 16/1 he'll still be there, which he will, and would have been a good bet.

I very much doubt he'd resign over this and certainly not by the weekend.

Hot coupe got a bit confused I think. There is no way he will be gone by the weekend hence the good odds.

May as well be 1000-1 he will have resigned

What rubbish. This will all blow over anyway. I am yet to find anyone who legitimately cares...

This is all so typically British....

A storm in a tea cup

Much ado about nothing

If there was a special committee convened to investigate how the country ended up so far down the crapper financially, maybe we'd learn something.

As it is, this hacking thing is incredibly boring and incredibly inconsequential in the big scheme of things. This whole fiasco affects less than 0.0000001% of the population and is not worthy of more than a few lines of copy for a few days at best.

Someone broke the law and they should be punished no doubt, but the brouhaha is just completely OTT

Moral panic and social hysteria....a British speciality

OK, so are you going up to Milly Dowler's parents and going to say that?
Or the families of those who died in Afghanistan?
And then had then their phones hacked.

Please tell me where you are going to do this and I will attend to film it.

Twat.

These scum were prepared to give false hope to a dead girls parents, let alone the war dead relations.

The politicians, whatever party, were all kissing News Corp arses, police complicit too and you lay want it to blow over.

Jesus fucking wept.

Don't call someone a twat just because they disagree with you. This shows you up - someone whom I previously thought a sensible and level headed guy - to be a conceited, maligned asshole. There's no need for it.

If you want to have a sensible discussion on the subject, reel your neck in - apologise and start again. Otherwise: I fear the internet is not the place for you.

Xxx,
Dave

Yes, They are in the wrong. Yes, They should be punished. Yes, Murdochs empire in an ideal world should crumble down - as the stranglehold he has on the "free" media on three continents is disconserting and concerning.

However. Is this more important news to me, Mr Joe Public, than say: The famine in Somalia which is killing thousands of people per week - the continuing monopolisation of the petrol pump prices by OPEC, or the fact that rainforests the size of the UK are cut down every day?

It is NOT worthy of being the main headline for 2 weeks. It is NOT that important to YOU, or to the WORLD. It isn't. This is what I'm sick of. It's been outed, it's been discussed. We don't need every broadsheet and every news bulletin to report on almost NOTHING ELSE whilst almost NOTHING IS HAPPENING. Give us an update when it's all resolved but in the mean time fuck off and give us some real news.

In short. Get some perspective man. Jesus fucking wept, as you so eloquantly put it.

Xxx,
Dave.

Mate most people won't listen to that sort of news because its not happening on their doorstep. Most would rather watch Murdochs stooge plant a foam pie in his face, its an easy ignorance I'm afraid to say.

Do you think the people you mention are enjoying all this media attention or do you think its only making a terrible situation worse?

Then let's consider the crime. Phone hacking and invasion of privacy. Should it be punished? Of course it should. Do I and the entire population of the United Kingdom need to watch? No...and that's my point.

These journalists and investigators hacked the phones of their victims for one reason. Because the information they sought to obtain sells newpapers. If it didn't, they wouldn't bother. By inference, those journalists believed that a significant percentage of the public in general is interested in prying into the private lives of grieving parents. And judging by the paper's large circulation, they weren't incorrect in their assumption. That the means didn't justify the end is clear. That the end itself is equally reprehensibe but not illegal has never even been considered. And that's also my point. I'm not interested in the private lives of grieving parents, nor am I interested in watching those who invaded their privacy being punished.

Just a couple of things:-

1) I completely 100% unreservedly apologise for the stupid name calling and extremely childish nature of my posts above.
2) I have a bit of history with the press, related to the way a serious car crash involving my parents was represented, which goes probably goes some way to explaining my reaction to this current situation.
3) There are ‘things’ going on personally recently that meant I’d polished off a particularly nice bottle of Merlot prior to accessing the internet (not looking for sympathy, just saying). As we well know (and I’ve now reinforced!), alcohol and keyboards do not mix well.
4) Members on here have generally been very helpful to me over the last 18 months or so and I’m very grateful for this assistance.

And finally…
5) I’m a member on several forums, discussing wide ranging subjects and I’ve never, repeat NEVER, posted in that vein before. Frankly I’m embarrassed and I think it might be time for a bit of a break from forums for a while.
