brembo brakes e82 to e92
OK so here what I have done.
I'm pretty sure that there was a lot of guys that have done the front swap. The six piston Brembo calipers swapped from E82 to E92, but... as of now I don't know a cheap way to do the rear swap. Well I have done it, successfully without brackets, adapters, and other means ( well almost ). One things that I should mention is that I'm not new to the scene of doing swaps, the only thing that I have not done yet was BMW. So if there is going to be someone that will say... This is a downgrade to your brake system, keep it to yourself. I did not make it for you, just for myself. I love the way it looks ( and brakes for that matter ). I love the fact that I have front Brembos matching the rear, and that I have matching floating rotors on all four corners of the car now. The front swap was pretty straight forward, unbolt set of calipers, reattach new Brembos with the floating BMW rotors and voila ! I still will change the brake lines to stainless steel, but for now it is still in a " stock " flex line mode. Yes, the " new" rotors are smaller, but... there is a pic here which gives you as idea as for how much smaller over all, to me it is insignificant ( 4mm total diameter ), but the weight difference is quite significant stock 11.5 kg vs the E82 floating rotor 10.0 kg. This makes 3 kgs total which is about 6lbs ! I'll take this any day. The only additional piece of hardware added to the front were the F30 335i dust shields which were bigger, and have nice band to it, to redirect air flow for better cooling ( of the rotor " brakes " ). And yes it is all shiny since I like my things cleaner than normal... I like things to be polished if possible to make it that extra special ( to me ). The rear calipers even though they bolt up... they have presented me with a problem which all of the other guys have had. I tried to find if there was anybody that had done it the way I did it. I could not find anything like that. So, I have found a rotor original BMW rear floating one that is a bolt up ( pretty much ) and the caliper WILL bolt up to the spindle with the original hardware + a washer to space the caliper in order to fit the rotor right smack middle. Yes I took the new rotor from the BMW dealer right to the machine shop and got a bit work done to it, but it is not necessary since you ( I ) could get the carbide ( dremo ) tool and cut a bit of the dust shield, I opted to get the right shape done on the mill. So at the end of it all, I have made a full set of brembo calipers retrofitted to the E92 with a great success. You could ask me why doing it this way why not a BBK. I'm not going to take this car to the track and beat it to hell, If I would wanted that I would have kept mine Evo X and would have gotten me 996 . But the best answer why not BBK is that it cost a fraction of the money ! Yes, it may brake as a fraction as well ( in some peoples opinion ) it is for me to find out. I tried to find good info, real testing of how 335i brembo brakes would compare to stock. NOT one of those " my friend told me.... or I felt a huge difference... blah blah " There is no solid numbers to support either, so I stick with mine and will keep these for myself. Like I said before they look great ! |

This would be an upgrade on a 325/328i, but a downgrade on a 335i. On a 335i you will lose 10mm in diameter and 4mm in thickness on the front brake disc, which is significant reduction in thermal capacity.

That is why there is a couple of pictures which show exactly the difference in thickness and over all diameter. When I have measured new rotors stock vs " new " well the results are as follows ( actual measurements )
At the front actual diameter is smaller by 4mm that is total that means 2mm on each end as for the thickness it is exactly 1.5mm difference there. At the back the same thing 4mm total on diameter that is 2mm at each end and thickness is 1 mm smaller ... So over all yes there is less mass to dispose the heat, no argument there. Definitely no hardcore racing for me, agreed , I'll take the occasional 1/4 at the time. |

They do look much better behind the wheels than the OE 3-series brakes, that is for sure!

Subscribed. Interesting
Bravo! We need insight to get the Rears to work with 128i/ 328i and the hand brakes where the knucke is different from 335i. The 335i has only the hub different from 135i Bonus points if we can use the same rear rotors you found... PS. I am local to you, maybe you can help.

Can this be done to my pre-lci 328i?
I have been thinking about upgrading my brakes to a better looking one for a while. Thought about the oem performance ones, but for my 328i, those only apply to the front. I would like a set of front and rear, if that can be done, please let me know! Thanks. btw, I don't mind driving to Canada if you can help |

Nice setup man, I helped somebody do something similar to get the front calipers onto a larger rotor.
What I then had him do is take the caliper bracket along with the washers to a CNC shop and have a new bracket made to to spec. It didn't bolt up perfectly as is, but a 1mm shim between the spindle and bracket allowed it to sit perfectly.

OK I still don't have too much time to spend here to go step by step and so on. but... Like I said before, there is almost no custom fitting, you need only one washer that needs to attached to the caliper, ( I used glue to hold it long enough to secure it in its mounting place ) all original hardware.
You don't need to go to US to get anything.... And for the US guys your prices are going to be even cheaper than ours ( lucky you ) Everything you need is sitting at your BMW dealer ! Funny thing is that the rotor used in this project is with aluminum hat and it cost FAR LESS than the stock 135 or 335 rotor check the prices for yourself. NOW here is the part number for the rotor 34216775287 it is of a brand new 2013 5 series BMW. How did I find it lets just say that I have very good connections in parts dept here locally at my BMW dealership ( I was allowed to literally pick the rotors of the shelf and measure it with my caliper ) This was the best matching rotor with least amount of work needed in order to get everything set up. Again like I said before you could get this thing to hook up without machining it, but I wanted to leave the dust shield in stock form, if you don't care for that, just take die grinder to it remove all that is needed, and your rotor will install right on. What exactly I have done, I took it to my machine shop ( next to my business ) and got matched my stock 335 rotor to the new one. They had to make one groove at the rear of it ( rotor ) it cost me $50 for their time. NOW as for the cleanliness YES I got things polished in places where most of us would not even look, ( rotor hats, suspension frame, suspension pieces, engine components ) sorry but I'm like that. You should see my previous cars ( projects ). People know me for that in my closest circles ( car nuts ) |

Please correct me if I am wrong: The 5 series rotor is the same size as 135i rear rotor. It will fit the 135i rear caliper unmodified. To fit 335i rear without modification to heatshield/backing plate you had it machined to reduce its diameter. Machining is not unnecessary if you have a 135i or you don't care for the backing plate/heat shield.

Actually
The rotor that I have used ( newest 5 series car ) fits E9X chassis only, it will not work on the E82 car, sorry. When I installed onto my E92, I could get it on without any modifications, but... I would have to "grind " or remove dust shield in the back, I have opted to have a machine shop remove a 3mm of material ( ridge, not the surface of the rotor whatsoever ) in the back of the rotor, ( nothing to do with the performance, just cosmetic ) you could do a dremo tool to remove the same thing I just wanted a clean look. Brembo brakes E-82 to E-92
This was a great thread, thanks for posting it!
Can you help with a couple of questions please? There are lots of pics of the front conversion, step by step, but all the rear pics start with the new calipers on the rotor and the dust shield modification and e brake interference. Do you have similar pics of the various stages here too? After all, the front conversion is relatively straight forward, and the rears require fiddling if you don't use the original rotors. The 2013 520-D rotors you found are excellent and cheap. When you were going through the inventory at BUDDS, couldn't you find a similar cross drilled, ventilated, floating rotor that looked more racy? I guess we could always have them drilled or slotted at a local machine shop, and paint the hub. I know I'm not the only one who hates the way the stock rotors rust at the hub, making a tire change need a mallet to break them loose! Here is a pic of the 135 rears I just got for less than $300 |

Brembo brakes E-82 to E-92
Thx again Doc,
I will text you so we can arrange pickup of the front calipers and hardware. I will strip and re-paint the 4 of them with VHT Imron Blue, and put the BMW Performance decals on them. Now I need to match the floating 5 series rear rotors with similar looking fronts and the whole set-up will look stock for less than half the price of the mustard yellow units from the dealer. I did notice Bavauto is blowing out all 4 rotors, calipers, fittings, SS hoses, carbon pads for $2,100 BMW Performance Brake Kit - Genuine BMW Genuine BMW Performance brake kits. These brake systems effectively dissipate heat as ... more info... Quantities are limited. rear calipers
I think there is couple of questions for me.
When I was doing the conversion, I was too eager in order to get everything put together as soon as possible and sometimes camera was not as close to me as it should. I did not want to get cross drilled or slotted for a simple reason, noise and higher maintenance. I was not looking for a track performer oh no, just a clean looking floating rotor that would match exactly the front set up already installed. I don't think that assembling the rear set up was more difficult than the front, but then again I'm not afraid of project as such. By the way did you by any chance scoop those calipers ( rear ) from ebay ? |

Brembo brakes E-82 to E-92
Yes I got them from E-bay because it was a local supplier, and he dropped them off at my house! I'm hoping to pick up the fronts today from Dr. G, but if not, Turner has direct bolt on for a good price.
Did you have to replace the pad sensor on both rears? Did you replace the aluminum pistons and plastic dust shields with SS kit? Sorry for so many questions, I have not done this change before and I appreciate all your input. Thx again TomB |

I don't know what people are talking about when they say that the front calipers bolt up with a special bracket for e90 ???? There is only one bracket on the caliper and it comes attached to the caliper directly from brembo Italy.
Sensors for the rear pads.... well there is only one sensor front and one rear, and you can reuse the original sensor that you have right now ( I did ) , I did not replace anything else no plastic dust shield, no pistons. if I would use my car for a track.... then I would consider alu pistons, but I would upgrade my brakes to a BBK brembo before I would do the swap. As for so many questions, well it is better to ask question, than suffer the consequences ( oh ! I did not know that ) You have the right ones anyway. |
