HPFP Recall

I didn't get the software update because according to the tech and my SA, I'm already up-to-date. I was still skeptical so I spoke to the tech foreman. He mentioned that there isn't a specific software update for any particular component or part. In this case, there is no software update specifically for the HPFP. There's only one software update that reads the entire system and detects if anything needs to be updated. About eight months ago, I had the wastegate rattle problem. Fixing the problem involved running a software update. The software version that was installed is E89x-10-03-502. So my question is, for those of you who had the HPFP replaced and the software update installed, is E89x-10/03-502 what you're all referring to? E89x-10-03-502 is supposedly the most current software update.

About 2 months ago I had one of the catastrophic HPFP, car died in the middle of the street in front of clients. Thankfully I was not on Interstate 90 yet. My car has 80K miles on it and no answer when I asked if it had been in for this problem before. SA said they reprogrammed the HPFP and car has had no issues the past 2 months (had many before) and my fuel economy improved to 25.5 MPH, but not sure what everyone else is getting. That is a 3.5 MPG improvement for me.

I do get, and did before get, carbon build up on the right exhaust tip. Not sure if this is normal, but I do associate it with the age of my car.

I drive both economical and aggressive at times, and always cool down the engine after driving regardless of how I drove. Wish there was no HPFP issue, but still one of the most fun cars I have ever owned. If this problem persists, maybe Lexus is next.

HPFP Replacement - Yes or No

XTAC,

I had the same dilemma you have. Wether or not to have the HPFP replaced, eventhough I didn't experience the problems most other 335i owners did. I eventually caved-in and had it replaced. With me, I don't see any difference. If you decide to have your's replaced, make sure they install the HPFP with part number: 13 51 7 616 446 . That is the current model with the latest design.

Good luck.

I had the HPFP and 5 of 6 injectors replaced on Friday (2 days ago) at Seattle BMW. I had not yet experienced any issues with it, but the SA had recommended it when I was in for an oil change a few weeks ago. They also updated the software to accommodate the new parts. My software was already pretty up to date, so lag / waste gate issues are in the past.

So far so good. In fact, the butt dyno is telling me that I'm getting a bit better responsiveness and power. That could be all in my head, but I wasn't anticipating any difference. I suppose if the old injectors were a bit clogged up that the new ones could be delivering some improvement.

Has anyone done service at Bellevue BMW? Are they good people to go to? My car doesn't seem to have the HPFP issue (yet) but warranty is up soon and would like to get this done. I'm planning on getting the extended warranty + maintenance too.

I've only heard bad things about BMW of Bellevue, although I haven't experienced them personally. Nonetheless, I would suggest going to the Seattle location.

HPFP - Software Update

Blackbird,

I'm curious as to which software update you received when you had your HPFP replaced. I didn't get the software update because according to the tech and my SA, I'm already up-to-date. According to the tech foreman, there isn't a specific update for the HPFP. It's just one software update that reads the entire system and updates any part/component that needs to be updated. The sofware version I have is E89x-10-03-502. You mentioned you were already up-to-date but you still got an software update. Do you mind reading your service paperwork and sharing what software they installed? Thanks.

Took an 8 hour road trip this past week. The engine light came on about 4 hours into the trip, and then went off once we got to the resort. Didn't drive too much while there, but as soon as we got an hour into our return trip, the engine light comes on again, with engine service light also. Took it into BMW dealer first thing Monday morning, told them what had been happening, they said it was the recalled HPFP and by noon I was all done. Kind of had me worried and was glad it was a recall item and a quick fix. Car seems to be doing fine now.

I just got mine replaced, everything seems to be fine, same as before. Haven't really noticed any significant difference...

HPFP - Engine Light

Since getting the HPFP replaced the engine light has lit-up only once. Turns off when I arrive at my destination. I'm due for service so I'll mention it and see what they come back with.

Unfortunately, my invoice doesn't have the version number on it. My SA isn't terribly responsive to email, otherwise I would try to find out from him.

My last software update prior to this was done in Nov 2009, and was ISTA/P 2.35.2. (E89x-09-06-510)
