CIC 2017 Map update?
Hi
I need some help with updating the maps in my BMW E90 2010 retrofitted with CIC navigation. I want to update from 2013 to 2017-1 Europe Premium. I went to my local BMW dealer and he quick gave me a USB memory stick with the maps and gave me also the FSC access code. He didn't have time to help more today, so I'm on my own now My CIC does not find any USB when I insert the USB stick. The car is from Sep. 2010 so that should include USB map update, but not sure about the CIC unit. I pulled the VIN from both the car and CIC and they both match (same VIN). But I know there is a emulator installed also. But when I look on the USB directory and folders, it looks to me he gave me the wrong USB. Dir: 1 'Folder' 2 'Folder' 3 'Folder' 4 'Folder' config.nfm NBT_ECE_101153.3.1111.pkg NBT_ECE_101153.3.1111.pkg.sig 28,9 GB So my questions: Did I get the wrong USB memory stick for NBT and not CIC? or does my CIC unit require DVD's? if the CIC requires DVD's can I burn them from the USB or do I need some files which are not on the USB? Thanks for any help Tom |

I just upgraded to 2017 maps on my 2011 335i..here is the instructions they sent me..maybe they will help you
You will need to use a 32 GB FAT32 formatted USB 2.0 stick to install this update. Please copy the download link below and paste it into your browser url space (do not paste it into the search engine toolbar!!), then choose "save as" to save the file to your desktop, then follow the instructions below to update your navigation system, we recommend using Google Chrome browser for faster download times, choose one USB Installation Instructions: ============================= 1. Use WINRAR.exe to extract the fILE 2017-1_BMW_North_America_Premium.rar which contains 4 folders called USB1, USB2, USB3 and USB4 on your computer's DESKTOP. 2. Move the file/folder found in the USB1 directory (config.nfm and pkgdb) on the root of the USB drive (do not move entire folder, move only what is inside USB1 directory!!) 3. Insert the USB stick into the USB port locted in the Glovebox (the center console usb port will not work) 4. Follow the onscreen prompts, it will prompt for the FSC code (please email us a photo of this screen, when you get prompted for the code) 5. The update will begin to load 6. When it prompts for the second USB, remove the USB stick, reconnect to your computer and delete config.nfm and pkgdb from the root of the drive 7. Move the file/folder found in the USB2 directory (config.nfm and pkgdb) on the root of the USB drive 8. Reinsert USB into the glovebox and allow it to continue updating 9. When it asks for the third USB, repeat steps 6-8 but use the USB3 folder 10. When it asks for the fourth USB, repeat steps 6-8 but use the USB4 folder 11. Wait for it to finish loading the data and you're done! Notes: ====== 1. Some USB drives come with a hidden partition at the front of the drive. Make sure to go into Disk Management (for Windows) or Disk Utility (OSX) and delete all partitions. Then recreate a single partition formatted FAT32 (Windows) or FAT (OSX, it's FAT32 by default). 2. For Mac users, OSX places a series of hidden files on the USB stick which may cause the NBT not to properly read the data, if you have this problem use a utility like Blue Harvest to remove all the hidden files/folders from the USB stick. 3. Also for MAC users, we recommend using the program The Unarchiver or "UnrarX". 4. The FSC activation code will be generated and emailed to you within 8 hours, after you complete step 4. |

You have CIC, it looks like they gave you NBT maps. That's why it's not working...
See the post above for downloading the correct files and uploading them to your car. You mentioned you're using an emulator. The FSC code should still work as long as the VIN is the one they used from your car/CIC (assuming you indeed checked it via Tool32 or NCS)

Thanks for helping.
I will go there tomorrow and get a different USB if they have it. Actually they are quite friendly and I'm sure they will even charge anything for the update. Yes I pulled the VIN using Tool32 |

Is there a way to cancel the update completely and start from scratch? Had the first USB in and the car shut off ignition at some point now it says usb 1 completed at around 28% and asks for the usb 2 but I'm worried it didn't copy everything over.. or would it be smart enough to know that?

I only used one flash drive. All I had to do was put the first file in the main directory and the rest of the files in another folder, then I used my laptop and deleted the previous and dragged out the next folder that was needed. Hope that made sense!

Isnt that the same as doing it 4 times? Id like to put all files on usb at same time. So no need to keep draging and deleting files. Just plug usb stick in once

If you notice, all the files from each folder has the same type/ name and the CIC searches for these two files at the root of the flash drive to complete the update. No computer will allow you to use the same file twice in a folder.

Why not do it while the engine is on? The update does not have to be done in one sweep. The system pauses when you shut the car off and picks up where it left off in the process until completed. Leave the USB plugged in.
