Surprise i had vargas stage 2 turbos

I bought my 335xi second hand from a dealer. I noticed it had catless dps, and a fmic. I finshed doing full bolt ons and the car ran awesome. It recently started smoking so I ordered new stock turbos. I pulled out the old smoking ones to realize the car had stage 2 vargas turbos. Now my question is i already have stock replacement turbos, getting the vargas ones rebuilt would be 500$ each. I cannot wait for the turn around to get them rebuilt at the moment because its starting to get cold and i do all my work in the driveway on jack stands.

My question is how much of a loss will have running the same boost on the stock turbos. The car has full bolt ons and jb4, currently makes about 18psi on the vargas turbos.

It will be a pretty significant drop in performance if you go stock turbos after having the upgraded ones in there..

Assuming the turbos were performing as good as they should, the difference will be very noticeable ... I say rebuild Vargas turbos

On straight pump 91/93 octane I would expect a drop of 50-100whp.

You'll need to switch back to the OTS maps of JB4 for your mods. Likely Map 2 and default settings.

It will be a large difference in power.

I thought they rebuilt them for $350ea. Send them the serial number and they should be able to provide you all the specs.

Haha! What a surprise! I once returned a Subaru to "mostly stock" and sold it to the dealer... wonder if the next person ever figured out the larger injectors and the forged pistons in that thing....

Shoot me an email at Chris@VargasTurbo.com with some pics of the turbos, see if you can get a S/N off of them, we can look up history and try to work something out.

You're not going to want to go back to stock turbos after having better breathing ones.

Just get a space heater and keep the garage door closed and let it warm up the area for a little bit and just suck up the rest, it'll be well worth your time lol.

This makes me hesitant about upgrading turbos.
My stocks are smoking now so I'm considering upgrading to VTT, but I can't have new turbos smoking again within just a few years!

Stock is by far the most reliable, short of going single.

Hmmmm, haven't hear of smoking Pures compared to RB's and VTT's. I think I'm going to spend the extra and get the Pures stg2 just for the peace of mind.

Return the stockers and have the Vargas rebuilt. It'll cost less and you'll be happier in the long run. Yeah, it sucks having some downtime and it'll be cold, but you could even use some of the savings to rent a car until it's done. Good luck!

Get them rebuilt, then sell them, return the stockers, and then buy Pure turbos.
