My car was telling me 24k between oil changes. I don't think any oil filter will last that long let alone the oil.

I changed it at 15k a year after I got it but I'm going to be changing it every 6 months now. My engine wasn't running as smooth as it used to in the last few months before I changed the oil and my gas mileage was starting to go down also (winter didn't help).

BTW, you get one free oil change every year (within the warranty period) after the in-service date of your car regardless of what the computer says.

Hopefully this is the case. I got only 5K on it and it will be one year at the end of this month. I should call to schedule a servicing.

My brand new 330d said 30000 km before first oil change. I think this is way too long on a new engine so after a short break inn 2500 km I changed the 7.5 liter engine oil and filter. As we say in Denmark; Oil is cheap, engines aren’t!

Anyone ever change oil from www.bimmex.ca (woodbine/john) I think. Just read the ad from a magazine today. They said they're specialize for BMW.

The dealers will not pay for an oil change before 24-25K. I had mine done at 8K. I own it (well, will do in 3 more years). The service agent told me I was wasting my money. It's not his car.

I talked to the service manager at Otto's yesterday -- they recommend (and allow under warranty) oil changes every 12,500 km. My 335i now shows service at 15K (and yes I own it...)

I was looking at Mobil 1's website, and they say that "Mobil 1 Extended Performance" synthetic engine oil is good for 15,000 miles, or 24,000km.

I believe BMW uses Mobil 1 - I wonder if this is the product they use.

I do a tonne of highway driving, very few short trips, no hard acceleration until the engine is warm, etc. Roughly driving 50,000km a year, I'm tempted to stay with the car's suggested service interval - which stills has me getting an oil change every 6 months.

This also means, I'm done with the free service! Does anyone have any opinions on the value of the vehicle check or inspection. It's due in 500km, but is there any real preventive maintainance involved, or is it just $150 to sit at the dealership for two hours?

I think it's Castrol, not Mobil 1. And the European formulation of Castrol, not the North American formulation...

BMW's have a "Condition Based Service System". The computer will tell you when the oil should be changed. Changing oil more frequently is just a waste of money. Lots of short trips or frequently driving on dusty roads = fewer miles between changes. The date doesn't mean much, unless you park it for the winter or something like that.

Oil not only lubricates the engine, but cleans it too. The oil is supposed to be black and dirty when you change it. That shows that the oil is doing its job. My owners manual recommends Mobil 1 5W-30 or 5W-40, but I am sure that there are other brands that are equivalent. Modern oils are good for a long time between changes.

If you change your own oil, don't forget to reset your computer. There are other threads that tell you how to do that.

I have no intention to drink it...hahaha

But I did my car's 1st oil change with only 12500km on it at BMW Autohaus FREE , no question asked whatever. The big bonus is their service was quick and the service advisor is friendly.
First impression is very important.

My service indicator seems to be telling me it's due at 21,000 Km. That seems like an awfully long time between oil changes. Even with full synthetic, I'm used to the first one at 4,000 Km and then at 8,000 Km intervals.

Then again, it is a lease, and I'm guessing I will probably want a new car at the end of the lease period. At any rate, I have less than 3,000 Km on it so far, so I have a bit of time before I really have to start asking questions.

I also struggled

But for $100 if it makes you feel secure and feel your car will last longer then do not hesitate. I change mine every 10,000kms. I am keeping my car. I also notice the car is alot smoother after the change. Waiting until 25 or 30k seems crazy. Not so much for the oil but I do not beleive for a second that a filter can withstand thagt kind of abuse.
