When would you...

Car is going into winter storage soon, question for the forum....

Do you change the oil and then park it?

or...

Park it and then change the oil in the spring?

The car is a 335i, FMIC and Cobb and gets about 5000 miles per summer. I plan to do one change per year.

I wouldn't be too worried about the oil as I would the fuel. I'd probably put a bottle of Stabil in as well.

What is this "winter storage". This car is meant to be driven, it's not a McLaren F1.

Well the OP is from Wisconsin so maybe he doesn't want to drive his RWD car all winter and subject it to the salt used on the roads. If he has a beater or other vehicle more suited to snow duty, it's a logical choice to store the 335i for the winter because he won't be able to use it, nor would he want to.

I think gas stabilized makes sense too. Maybe start the car up every now and then as well.

I stored my car for about 3-4 months out of the year. Don't change the oil, that is just waste of oil and money.

Change it in the spring before you start driving.

I personally started my BMW every 2 weeks atleast, got it up to full operating temp (oil), and revved it to get the condensation out of the exhaust.

Make sure you add fuel stabilizer.

That's about it.

If you dont plan on starting it, I would cover the exhaust tips so no critters go in there and you might want a battery tender.

Most would agree starting and getting to full operating temp and a little revving is better for the car. No engine likes to be off for several months as it allows seals and other areas to dry out.

My brother in law didn't start is porsche gt3rs for a few months and the rear main seal dried out, car had 800 miles on it.

You pegged it. I have a 4x4 truck that I use in the winter.

Gas stabilizer and s start up each month is probably in order. It will be stored in heat too.

Thanks!
