the dealer wont always do it for you as they claim it is liftetime. assuming they will be around 800. they need to replace the pan as well. an independent shop should be around 500 or so

I paid 310 for parts and another 300 for labor. And yea, they replace the pan, gasket, & filter.

^ that's what I heard. I don't think it's a hard job to do yourself though. Time to do some research!

Find a good SA at a dealer, mine charged me like $480 I think, parts and labor. Kept telling me no real need to change but I always insist. 6yrs old, 64k miles just for a peace of mind, transmission does feel just a tiny bit smoother. Either that or I also had rear differential fluid changed for $180 too.

Note: personal experience here...

Parents bought an e90 330i. PPI stated that there was a leak in the trans pan. The indy shop replaced the pan and the transmission fluid. Personally, it may not be necessary but if you are going to do the repairs and preventative maintenance, you might as well.

There's no reason to replace lifetime fluids unless there's a leak/issue. The BMW engineers who design know the cars better than all of us, so don't think you know something they don't. If you're doing it for peace of mind and only keeping the car for a few years, that's a pointless waste of money IMO.

I've done quite a few fluid/pan changes when replacing leaking mechatronic sealing sleeves. You have multiple options and pricing can vary widely.

1. Drain and fill without dropping pan.
2. Replace pan and refill. Pan has integrated filter that is not serviceable. If you are beyond 50k, I would recommend replacing the pan. I sell them for $200 but you can buy them online for $130 + shipping. BMW "lifetime" fluid sells for $62/liter over the counter. Drain and fill needs about 4, new pan and fill needs closer to 6. I buy it in bulk and get it cheaper.
3. #2 plus replacement of the mechatronics sealing sleeve. For an extra $50 it just makes sense as they all leak at some point.

If you're willing to hike to Howard County, MD, let me know and I'll shoot you my number.

Next Level,

take the drive to Adam's (Clem) place, it's not that far from NOVA (Ive done it twice) and its a nice drive. Adam knows his S and will have you out of there cheaper and faster than going to the Stealer. Plus, he has a nice flat screen to watch whilst you wait....

I can even help you do it. Changing the Tranny fluid is cake on these cars as long as you have a lift!

I just had it done a couple of weeks ago at Clem's as well. It's a no brainer ... go to Clem's.
