bmw 335d

Just been looking at a few e90's,e92's and e93's and seen a nice 2006 e90 335d. But was wondering if it has a dpf ?
As i would hate it if it chucked out soot every time i put my foot down. Also what sort of mpg do 335d owners get?

Yes has dpf, my miles to gallon vary from 28ish to 32 on normal driving, motorway steady driving would improve up to near 40 but I would reckon mid 30s is about what you can expect. Immense cars to own for sure, such effortless power.

335d all have a DPF from the factory, they emit zero diesel soot, pipes are always clean.

A very quick car indeed. Good on juice if you drive sensibly and well worth tuning.

The car now seems to have 2 chimneys for exhausts, makes a nasty smell and a lot of noise.

Might help on the drag strip though apparantly

I was expecting it to get slightly better mpg, but that's probably just me thinking because its a diesel it should get great mpg....

I've read up on people getting blocked dpf's at around 100k. The car iam looking at has 75k on the clock does that mean it's going to be blocked in a little while..?

I have not heard/read about any DPF getting clogged over 100k.

75k is quite a few miles away from 100k

Yea i did a search and theirs a thread on some one who does mostly town driving having a blocked DPF so he removed it and went for a map. What sort of mpg do you get? I haven't yet drove a 335d yet but how would it compare to a Audi s3?

I got 18mpg for a long time, went upto 22mpg for a long time also.

I used mine very hard!! I didn't really care for MPH LOL.

I had a re-map on mine and it made for a stonkingly quick car. I have videos if your interested.

Very reliable car also. Far more reliable than the 335i.

You will never bore of that torque!! Just half throttle and you have literally fucked off down the road!!

I've driven the S3 and it does not compare. It feels numb and does not have the acceleration of the 335d

on top of that the S3 is a hatch. The BM looks classier!

As an indication of economy I do mostly short suburban trips ( < 3 miles, 30 mph ) and I have not reset my trip meter for about 2 years. It is steady at 32.8 mpg. Just driving fluidly.

On a nice long trip back to the UK, from Switzerland through London and on up to Scotland I got over 40mpg. Mixture of Autobahn, Motorway, London driving and A and B roads in Scotland.

I always use the good Diesel (i.e. BP Ultimate) as it seems just that much smoother and torquier with an added bonus of slightly better economy. It also helps cut down on particulates. Never had a problem with the DPF and I do mainly short journeys. [knock on wood]

If I do feel the DPF regeneration engaging I just keep driving until it passes, letting it finish the job (it is like running on a choke on an old car - slightly rich running, and the gearbox changes its mapping to hold the revs a little higher. Also a bit more under-bonnet heat and a slight hot caramel fragrance. Some people don't notice).

I was really looking for reasonably good economy and performance. I drive my cars like i've just stole them to be honest lol But 20mpg is abit low isn't it...So would you say a remapped 335d would take remapped S3? Could you send me some of the video's, is their any main difference's in saloon's and coupe 335d's ?

dxb and Dave do you lot own auto's or manual's ? The one iam looking at is a auto and by the look's of it most of them are auto's. I haven't had a auto gearbox car before how are they to drive with the auto box,i've noticed it has paddle shift's on the steering wheel.?

if you want big petrol engine performance with decent economy - this is the only alternative...................

only swapped mine 3 weeks ago for an M3 - and if i'm honest, 90% of the time i'd rather have my 335d back

No manual mate, the auto is beautifully matched to the 3.0twin turbo engine.

Yeah you will prob achieve near on 30's i'd guess unless your a loon like me!!

Yes a re-mapped 335d rolling start will pull away from a re-mapped S3 as they have similar power but the S3 has the power sapping 4wd to contend with once rolling!!


335d even in standard form really come alive over 100mph!!

After 15 months in the M3, I'd say that only 10% of the time I'd want the 335d back. That 10% is based on time actually spent in petrol stations

I got 34mpg out of the 335d, which was 2 years and nearly 40k miles. Don't really think you can complain about that in a 286bhp car

The steering wheel paddles were a cost option when I bought mine. Specced them as they were very cheap. Never actually use them.

Using paddles (no matter how quickly they are supposed to react, there is a pause as the electrics decide what happens) still feels totally detached to me. Like driving on a PS3. I prefer an automatic or a good old fashioned quick shift and clutch.

If I want a little more spirited response I just slide the gearlever over to DS. Gearbox is very good. Crisp and not like the earlier torque converters that got the slush-box tag.

RFTs and squidgy bushes will hinder your progress down rough B roads more than the gearbox.

An M3 will always be the car to own, its a proper car without a doubt. A 335d is a great car also. In a straight line can just about keep up with an M3 (providing it has a re-map) LOL

On track the M3 is sublime, the 335d aint half bad either.

As regards miles per gallon you need to remember these cars are nearly 290bhp as standard and more when tuned. You will also drive it fairly keenly and they are indeed very rapid in any driving conditions. A car that can give that performance and return low 30s mpg in day to drive driving is very impressive so it seems if you need more mpg you will need to go with less power to achieve that.

these cars can manage 45+mpg on the motorway if steady and clear. most of my miles are on the motorway and i get average 40mpg. of course that goes down once you move onto A roads , and town traffic

I did once, to prove a point drove like miss daisy for 8 miles and achieved 57mpg... On the 8 miles home I averaged 18mpg LOL
