Went for a quick drive in the snow:)

Was stuck at work all weekend, plenty of snow in the car park but it was pretty late by the time my shift had finished, so didn't really have a chance to go and test the winter tyres

...instead went for quick drive today

So how were they and what are they?

I'm gutted. I've got £1500 worth of winter rubber on my car at the moment and not even so much as a single flake has fallen here.

I put too much confidence in my wintracs this year, with 4 inches of fresh snow, hill hadn't been tackled by a single car yet.

Forgetting one important aspect of hill driving in the snow, momentum. Got half way up, going far too slowly, lost momentum and traction. Thought, there is no way i'm getting out of this. Started to slowly slide back so released the brake a tiny bit to get the wheels turning properly until the tyre picked up enough snow to start regaining traction again and gently eased it back down the hill.

Went and found a smaller hill to test with

Great pics btw

Beginning to wonder if winter tyres would have paid off, left the car at work this morning and trained it home

That is a whole new thread but don't forget...

Buying a new set of used alloys, putting winter rubber on them firstly allows you to recoupe the cost of the alloys on resale and saves on 6months worth of wear on the more expensive summer tyres. Therefore it can be cost affective providing you buy used and sensibly.

The benefit is, you are a lot safer if you need to drive in snow, less likely to get stuck if caught in snow, say if it snows whilst at work and most importantly, for me, unlikely to get wet shoes if you have to abandon the car

Downside is, you could be stuck in a massive traffic jam with every other idiot or doesnt have winter tyres and has got stuck. Plus as someone else found out, some people think they are invincible in the snow, end up crashing into you. Bit like my neighbour, he was coming and going all day friday when it hammered it down. He has a newish landrover defender with all the shit attached to it. I've never seen him drive it so much. He stacked it and now has a courtesy car sitting on the drive way. Some matiz thing.

The winters are great in snow (Falkens - not so good when the temps are above 5), the only other cars out about on the back roads were 4x4s and tractors. Part of the reason for getting winters tyres is so that I can justify some summer wheels to the wife

Good reviews from the falkens then, i considered those too.

Like you have found, the compound is so soft that when it's warm it feels uneasy when going quite quickly in the bends.

Went for a drive through some quite deep snow and slush with my Hankook icebears today, I'm amazed by how good they are! No slip or anything. Great when icy to.
Ive found if I put another few psi in them when its warmer they are fine but feel softer than the summers

Wow amazing pics been out and about all weekend and today came a fun test. An uphill road to the kids nursery and then flat part about 800 yards and a solid sheet of ice. Could barely walk over it to cross the road. Ended up shuffling as I walked.

The car on its falken winters perfect as if it was a dry summers day
