Neutrino45, I am not 100% sure what you are asking but here are two responses.

At this time I am in the process with the SA, who is in contact with the regional rep., who is in the process of setting up a case to present to BMW about head replacement. I will keep the thread up to date on how that turns out.

If you are referring to work being done while under warranty and for the service department continuing with the work if it is not fixed properly when the warranty expires, it is from personal experience with a previous issue allot of years back. I had continuing transmission issues, and the service dept. continued to work with the problem since it was started under warranty after the warranty expired. The following just would make no sense. If the service dept. working under warranty does not solve the problem while they are working on it, and the warranty runs out while working on it, they just stop, and start charging the customer for the work. Am I not seeing the forest from the trees on this one? I am just going from logic and experience.

Is this a known problem for the 335 as well?

I'm having the same ticking noise with my 335 on occasion as well. Did you ever find out what the problem was?

I answered my own question on the warranty expiring. Well my SA did….

As good fortune would have it my SA called and said they need my car to do some more diagnostics on it for the new cylinder head case. I took it in and they have my N52 at this time.

Anyway, I asked him about the warranty. “What would happen if my warranty were to run out tomorrow since this is on going and very expensive” He stated “There is enough documentation on my car to continue”. That was good enough for me.

If the problem was reported within the warranty period then yes they have to honor the repairs as "in" warranty.

Engine Tapping Noise

I just took my 2007 328i Coupe to the dealer to have the same annoying engine tapping noise diagnosed. Awaiting with baited breath what they will come back with. Surely as a known issue with this engine, there should be a standard fix. Hoping the CPE extended warranty will cover this.

Yahoo!!! The best day of 2011 on my calendar!!!

BMW USA approved the cylinder head replacement for my N52 at 4:20pm EST March 10, 2011.

A big thank you to my SA who worked on this issue with me since I first took it in about 5 months ago. It will be about 2 weeks for all of the parts to come in. I will keep the thread updated as the time goes on.

Congrats I got mine replaced no noise but a week ago it sounded louder than before they replaced. Hopefully it was isolated other than that I'm happy.

After short trips, I started revving up mine up to 3K holding there for a few seconds just before shutting down the engine. So far I don't hear the ticking. Lifters replaced spring time, ticking came back this winter. With this way of shutting down after short trips I don't have ticking.

if you want to reproduce ticking, do a short trip shut down the engine wait a day, do another short trip shut about a minute, if it doesn't start ticking then shut down the engine again. Wait another day, after a minute of running it will most probably start ticking. I think after each short low rev trips, the oil starts depleting from the lifters. If enough gets depleted it starts ticking. Oil finds its way back to the lifters after warm up and high rev driving, so 10 ~15 min driving removes the ticking.
My hope is by reving up the engine each time before shut down of my short trips will allow enough oil back to the lifter. So far it worked.

The only solution to this is the "head replc." I hot my done 2 months ago, All I had to do was sent them a vid with the ticking noise left the car in for 2 days and it was done..

Our '08 328xi was dropped off at the dealer today to get the cylinder head replaced under warranty.
We got a 135i with a DCT for a loaner!

really an '08? i Have an 06 that also has this tick.
Im really starting to question the intelligence of the engine engineers at BMW. This ticking goes back to the 1990s, is there really no fix for it???
I do not think I will be owning any more bmws.

anyone try lucas oil stabilizer?
i am aware of the pros and cons, was just wondering if anyone tried it and what their results were?

Well I think mine is ticking again. Its somewhat muffled, but I can still hear it. I got the valve lifters replaced a couple weeks ago. I don't have the time to mess with it now, but every time it ticks, I grab some iPhone footage so it will be documented.

The dealer was cool the first time I brought it in, so I am hoping they won't fuss about going to the next step and doing the head.

As an aside, it also seems to run/idle rougher since the new valve lifters... odd.

I'm ticking again too, about two weeks after valve lifter replacement. Too busy this week to bring it back, but it will be going in soon since I only have a month left on original warranty.

It can happen if you use low grade gasoline

I am finally (hopefully) getting mine fixed on Thursday. I have been bringing it up for months so I hope this is it. My warranty expires this month and I am almost at the 50k so I am glad it has been documented before. Crossing my fingers.

Most important thing is to document when it happens (cold start in the morning or anytime you start before oil temp is up) so that you can show them. I have had a hard time replicating the issue. I have reported it several times. I was told there was some kind of bulletin on the issue so you could bring that up too.

Just got mine back from the shop yesterday afternoon. First few start-ups there was a noticeable tick coming from the new lifters, but it would stop almost immediately. Today no tick whatsoever. Hope this holds up ...

My first one had the ticking problem. It happened at first mostly when I went for a long drive at highway speeds and then let it sit for a couple of days, then started happening more frequently. When I spoke to BMW about it (after the warranty had expired), they said that a master mechanic had to listen to it and then they would make an offer as to how much they would pay - it was like it was a standard problem, and it was nothing out of the ordinary for them to arrange.

I got rid of the car before the booking with the mechanic, and touch wood my new one hasn't got this problem yet. I must say though that after you have had the problem you start to listen to your engine more and hear all sorts of things.
