335i Short Shift Kit Installation cost

How much have you paid for an installed BMW Performance short shift kit?

The dealer has quoted over $700--$420.17 for the parts (retail) and $287.50 for the installation.

I know the parts can be had for ~10% less, but I have no ballpark for the labor--though it sure seems expensive. I looked at the DIY and I would attempt it myself except for the whole shifter arm part which seems like a major pain.

And then there's the matching emergency brake--they want $140.69 for the part and $172.50 for the install. How difficult is that one to install? (Couldn't find the DIY if it exists) Maybe I can buy that online for $110 and install it myself?

Thanks for any advice!

Here's the DIY: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ht=ssk+install

You may also want some feedback about the SSK. I test drove a 335i with one and didn't like the way it felt going into 4th and 6th (my hand would hit the center counsel).

Thank you very much for replying; I have already reviewed that and decided to let someone else do it for me. I'm trying to get an idea of what others have paid to have it done.

I wonder if the one you drove had the installation done incorrectly, since it is possible for the installer to situate the shift arm rotated 180 degrees, potentially causing 4th and 6th to be too far posterior.

Don't waste your money. Not a worthwhile mod. What you gain in shorter throws is far outweighed by notchiness. I will eventually revert back to the stock shifter.

Well that's depressing to hear--thanks for letting me know, though! I will definitely consider that before having it done.

What do you mean by "notchiness"? I generally consider that a good aspect of a shifter ("notching" into each gear). Is that not what you're referring to?

Also, I assume all this talk is concerning the BMW SSK. How does it compare to the UUC SSK? I dislike the stock shifter, and am looking for something that feels more solid and notches into each gear more. Don't really care about throw length.

my E90 came with the BMW Performance SSK + Performance Knob so I have no idea what it was like before.

i did drive an E82 135i and if that's anything like what my E90 was before the SSK, i'm actually glad i have the SSK.

one dislike i have is the alcantara boot. previous owner left his hand in the boot when not shifting and now there's a nicely worn area by 3rd and 5th.

i have the oem ssk. i paid around 300 for parts from tischer and 100 for install at a indy shop. I then sold the knob and boot for ~100 since I didnt like it.

The oem ssk feel exactly the same as the stock shifter only shorter throws. so if its notchy before then it will be notchy after. I have no such issues and its one of the best mods ive done. even the techs always comment on how they like my ssk when servicing my car.

It's not a bad stock shifter, but there's a little more play and longish throws for my taste. I'd like to be able to "two-finger" it easier. Mine has the M-sport knob, which is an improvement from the regular knob, but I'm thinking the SSK would help even more.

Thanks! Wow--$100 install. At least the dealer has done one before, but $287? I wonder if they have a manual that tells them how many hours to budget for the job?

The previous owner had the BMW Performance SSK installed through the dealer. You have to be extremely precise to switch gears quickly. If you're even a little to the left or rights, you will get stuck.

I haven't tried any other SSK's. There's always the slim possibility they work better.

When I go onto BMW's website, I can select the SSK as 'installed' for $535!

An installation cost of $115 seems much more reasonable than the $287.50 they quoted me. I wonder if BMW expects the dealer to honor that price? It's certainly worth asking about--anyone have experience doing that?
