Had a good , no thread on this since 2007 so...

Anybody got any recent recommendations for reasonable Tyre Insurance? Google seems pretty sparse:

This seems possible, but cant figure out how it works (around £20 for two years!), but you have to use their fitting stations and they seem euro focused, rather than UK

I got the 5er tyres insured by the supplying dealer for £170, but Williams don’t do this when I bought the 3.

i have car2cover. no idea what they are like as I have not claimed yet. Average cost of one tyre is about £200-£250 anyway, so you only need one to not be repairable or damaged etc and it has cost you nothing for any other claims you make after that. It is just what you consider a viable risk. For me peace of mind and ease really. Like I say, no idea what the claims process is like, so cannot comment on that side.

I am also with car2cover, have never used but with run flats you only need a puncture and then its a £250 bill.

I paid £250 for 3 years with up to 5 claims. Its piece of mind and the odds of having at least 1 flat were pretty good.

Question though... do they simply just payout if you have a puncture? I mean isn't this open to fraud in the respect that if you need to replace your tyre due to low tread, what's stopping you just putting a nail into the tyre and getting it replaced for free?

I just can't see them paying out easily and you'll have to give a 19 page hand written statement of account.

Anyone tried to claim?

In the end I decided not to go for tyre insurance. Didn't buy RTI insurance either. I could have spend an extra £1,000 on various policies, so I decided to go for none and take the bills on the nose as they come.

I have a policy with Motor Partners - had to change two rear tyres last year at £600 for the pair - the claim limit was £250 per tyre but as it saved me £500 I was still happy.

I rang the company, they faxed me the forms which the dealer filled in, I faxed it back to them and had the cheque a few days later.

Interesting that all policies are not the same - the dealer that changed the tyres said that the policy they sell has no claim value limit BUT wouldn't have covered the particular problem I had.

The policy was expensive - included gap cover as well - but it's nearly paid for itself on the one claim.

Try www.Click4gap.co.uk for your RTI policy, with the current climate and cars losing LOTS of value, it makes more sense to have a policy that covers any outstanding finance in the event of a total loss and the insurers only paying book price.

I covered mine with about 20k of cover for approx £150. - will keep the lease company happy if I ever have it written off - they will always get their money back if there happens to be a shortfall

Handy Tip - Don't buy on their first quote.....leave it for about ten days and then they email back and knock 10% off the bill to tempt you. It happened when I got my first quote, and last year a colleague at work got a quite for her new Citroen C2 VTR, waited for a week or so, and sure enough a discount code came through!

Oh boy... a sore subject this.

I've only just had a claim rejected for a puncture on the front driver's side, from autoptrotect MBI. The reason was because they claim the tyre was worn. Now it was worn but I think it was still legal. The reading was 2,1.6,1.6 mm on the 3 points across the tyre. Now as i read the DVLA site it has to be a minimum of 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tyre. I fail to see how the reading can be interpreted as a non legal tyre. On the limit maybe but not failing....

Anyone care to comment? I'm not going to buy tyre insurance again. I don't have the tyre still so I can't argue the point.

BTW I replaced the fronts with Michelin PS RFTs instead of Bridgestones and paid 190 a tyre fitted all in. Not the best deal but when you need a tyre it has to be done soon.

If you can buy 19" rear run flats that are fitted to the car as standard and not Falken etc for £150 fitted then can I please order as many as you can get your hands on.

I never knew such a thing existed as Tyre Insurance until today - have been looking into it after reading this thread.

SimonBenn i think i have your answer. Car2Cover is administrated by the same company you mentioned autoprotect MBI reading the policy doc.

In the policy doc is says under general exclusions .. " 8. Tyres which are below the legal limit (2mm) when the incident occurs."

So thats why they are rejecting your claim

Your correct the legal limit is 1.6mm but the policy document says the legal limit and indicates 2mm.

I think its worth you pursuing this personally. All insurance is covered by the FSA principles

There are strict FSA principles regarding "treating the customer fairly" and one of them concerns the accuracy and clarity of information given to the policy holder in an exclusion document.

There is a definite contradiction between stating " The Legal Limit " and then stating their own definition of that limit higher than the recognised legal limit.

I think its worth a well worded letter saying the poicy document misrepresented to you the extent of your cover and that the insurer is obliged to make good the claim. ( e.g. your understanding was the tyre had to be legal )

This is categorised as misselling a product IMO

You can mention you intend to Cc the letter to the financial ombudsman and the FSA if you are not satisfied with their response.

Keep an eye on how quickly they respond to you. Again they are obliged again under FSA rules how quickly they respond to you. Should they take an unneccesary amount of time to respond ( more than 8-10 business days), the financial ombudsman/FSA can fine the insurer for your costs/time without a usable vehicle.

I'll leave you to your own assumption as to if i have worked in Insurance and seen much slimer cases than this, paid out rather than go through the Financial Ombudsman aggro and making a larger payout.

I heard about it, but in 18 yrs of driving I've had 2 punctures. Not worth it IMO, and especially on the RFTs as I would need to re-fit RFTs. And with non-RFTs costing around £130 - £170 it wouldn't be worth it cost wse.

i have tyre insurance with car2cover and they are excellent.
my tyre had a nail in it and was taken to my local bmw dealer, they rung up for a autharisation number and it was done straight away.
as the tyre was under £250 they didnt need to ring up but just replace the tyre.
i paid the bill and had a cheque within 8 day for the full amount.
would highly recommend as i have my premium cost back within the first claim and still allowed another 4 tyres.

i think if you use main dealer they base it on dealer trust.but if you use somewhere like kwik fit they have to ring in with tread details and condition etc.

I bought mine from blackcircles for my 330D 17" for this fitted. I suppose u have 19" on ur 335 so yes they will be more.
Could have got non bridgestone, but still recognised maker RFT for more like £120 but as only replacing one tyre had to go with bridgestone.
