Replacing E90 Gear Knob

Took delivery of a lovely new weighted gear knob today and I'm trying to fit it to my E90. I read a few instructions online which said to put the box into 2nd and pull upwards, I was expecting the OEM gear knob to come off and leave the leather skirt in situ but it seems like the knob and leather piece are fixed somehow and they both came free of the car as one.

Anyone have any clue as to how to get them separated?

Cheers

Stuart

Standard gear knobs are seperate from the boot. It looks like you are removing a M-tec type which comes as one bonded together. You will have to purchase a new standard boot.

Damn... I figured they would all be the same!

Off to ebay then I suppose - unless anyone knows of a good alternative?

R80TER posted a thread a while back about a gearknob he bought from Storm Motorwerks so I figured I would try them out.

I'm not a huge fan of aftermarket parts but this does look nice in my opinion with the brushed aluminium trim. So far I am happy with the way it smooths the gear shifts in my car, the change is slight but definitely noticeable and enough to be a worthwhile purchase.

http://www.storm-motorwerks.com/interior/bmw/ Excellent service from Bilal - he offered to take it back if I wasn't happy with it for aesthetic or functional reasons.

Some quick pics without the leather boot

I'm annoyed with myself for not checking on the M-Sport leather gaiter issue but it looks like £15 will buy me a standard one from ebay. Ideally I'd like a replacement matte black leather one but BMW say they want £55

Why don't you ask an auto trimmer to make you a boot?

Can't see it being that much just enter auto trimmer into www.yell.com
