BMW Emergency Service
Credit where it's due.
Last wednesday my car began to exhibt the standard 320i issues - I thought I was going to see out my tenure without problems but it was not to be. It began with a stutter / mis-fire accompanied by a variety of lights on the dashboard. Initially I was able to clear this with a reboot and all was well but it began happening more and more often, especially when going back on the power on the over-run and so I booked it in to be looked at but they couldn't see it for a week. However, things got worse culminating in the light coming on permanently and the car shaking like a shitting dog. I suspected the coil pack. I called BMW Emergency Assist on Saturday morning and the chap said I'd get a text informing me of the technicians ETA. I phoned at 10.55am and got a text saying the tech would be with me at 11.33am and he arrived at about 11.20. I described the symptoms and said I thought it was a coil pack as it was a common issue on this engine. He wouldn't confirm it was a common problem but indicated his spares box which must have contained about 20. He hooked up the diagnostics which confirmed No. 2 cylinder had decided to take a sabbatical from combustion duties and had been shut down to stop sending unburnt fuel into the cat. Within minutes the engine was in pieces on the lawn and he replaced the coil, the plug and the injector. Within an hour everything was back together and running perfectly and it saves me the ballache of dropping the car off at the dealers. Good Service, I reckon.

are the coil packs a known issue? If they are is there not a case for all coil packs to re replaced and not just the failing ones?
