2009 IDrive upgrade?

We all know that BMW listens sometimes to complaints. Since so may Journalist and some owners deride Idrive the may decide to improve it. There are some unconfirmed reports that Apple may be working on the next Gen Idrive.
Either way I think some major improvements will be made for the 2009 new 7 series.
If this is the case, do you think it will show up in the 09
E90 (Sept 08 built) even though the 7 will be launched in early 09.

Thx

im no expert, and obviously were discussing something very far into the future but it seems bmw technology like this usually trickles down from the top of the ladder all the way down to the bottom. so i doubt you would see it right away in a 3

There has been much discussion on this. Personally, making iDrive with a touch screen would eliminate 80% of the complaints IMO.

Obviously, the screen would have to be brought a tad closer to the driver.

Actually I prefer the "mouse" over touch screen. We have touch screen in the lexus for SOME functions. And the screen is constantly smudged. But there is no reason why they couldn't do both touch screen AND mouse.

Since I've been drinking Apple juice for the past four years (I'm a Mac addict) I would be put into a state of pure euphoria if Apple were to help BMW design their next iteration of iDrive. I wonder what it would be called, iCar or iBMW, probably something with an "i" in front of it. Who knows.

I can't wait to see what happens next with iDrive!

Yeah my M35x nav system is pretty good, but sometimes I find it inaccurate. For example I was looking for a restaurant that I was unfamiliar with and I was taken to about a half a mile away from where it actually was. Maybe they moved?

Overall though it's good, except voice commands are a PITA because you have to choose from a list of set commands to narrow down your search for things. For example to input a new destination it is a 2-3 step process until you get to start inputing info about your new destination.

Having the dedicated buttons to switch directly from screen to screen is helpful but I like BMW's presentation more for some reason.

Not much that can't be fixed with a simple software update. Siemens/BMW can always optimize certain parts of the code to improve selection response time. And some menus could be better organized to improve the searches. Very trivial to update since the presentation stuff is all Java.
I don't see how any iDrive improvements would need to involve Apple.

I think if Apple got into the mix they would overhaul they whole iDrive interface and change it completely.

as far as i know Apple is currently *exclusively* working with mercedes and their next generation on board computer so unless something else happens by then, i don't think Apple would be involved in iDrive development.

it was reported that it is only a 6-month exclusive contract with MB, so BMW is next! :rocks:

I don't want any more iPud in my life, please!

I redesign is cool, just don't make it look like Apple software.

I have to be honest, as a business analyst I don't believe the rumors that Apple is working with Mercedes and I don't think Apple will ever work with another company in that sense for a non-Apple or Co-branded product. Apple makes products for themselves, in their own designs, in their own packaging - period. It's been part of the reason they have been so successful.

I can't stand touch screens. They always look like crap when they get loaded with fingerprints. Hopefully Apple stays clear of it. I don't need to need any iCrap in my car.

The primary problem with touch screens is that in order to touch the controls, you have to look at it and give it your full attention. While you're fiddling around poking at your screen you cannot possibly be paying attention to your driving or looking WTF you're going.

With iDrive, you can make short quick glances at the screen while navigating with the controller, which is much less distracting. The voice commands make it even better, for those who care to learn and use them.

I do NOT want a touch screen in my car. You have to rely on visual feedback with a touchscreen, which takes too much focus away from driving. You have to look at the screen to figure out what function you want, then keep looking to make sure you touch the right button. Even with hard buttons, you can feel for things without actually looking.

Similarly, with iDrive the controller is in a very comfortable position and and can be operated without looking. Just a quick glance at the screen (which doesn't vary too far from your line of sight) and you can confirm that you are doing the right thing.

Yes, I don't see BMW going for touch screens. They are opposed to touch screens for a reason--needs visual feedback.

The next 'big' thing on the iDrive system is probably going to be hand gestures. There were some demonstrations published earlier showing hang gesture operations with iDrive.
