Yes you CAN install rear sway bushings without dropping the subframe.
I just did! Maybe its common knowledge but a quick search didn't reveal anything.
I bought some new poly bushings for my rear sway and since I didn't have a new sway bar to install as well I did not fancy dropping the subframe for some $4 bushings. So I didn't. And it's slow but easy and very doable. Removing the rear wheel reveals that the bushing is pretty front and center. You just need a 10mm wrench to unbolt it. That is it. A few tips though. A longer wrench is better, the passenger side one is a BITCH since the fuel filler tube is in the way. I have a full tank so I didn't remove it, but doing so would make the passenger side a lot faster. The "lower" of the two bolts can be removed with a small ratchet and socket, easily on the driver side but not possible with the fuel filler neck installed on the passenger side. All in all it took me 45min to do that job from getting the idea to try it, to torqueing the last wheel back on. Now the REAL question, can you install a new rear sway without dropping the subframe? I say possibly. There looks like room to snake the factory 13mm bar through with a lot of persistence but it will be a neat magic trick. However fitting a bigger one, M3 for example, may prove to be difficult to impossible. But once I go down that route I intend to try. Worse comes to worse I drop it, but if I can avoid it I will. |

For the most part it drives the same. Turn-in feels more solid and I can feel a bit more road bumps but nothing that really stands out. If you didn't know it had them you wouldn't really be able to tell.
But knowing how my car drives it feels just a bit more planted/confident in the corners. It's not drastic but I noticed it right away. For the 45min I spent installing bushings that were $12 shipped, I can't complain. Small investment, small but noticeable gain. Worth the money, I'd do it again. |

I've modified cars for years. Have Autocrossed them as well as taken them on actual tracks. Road Atlanta and Pocono for example. I was a SCCA member for years, granted that was years ago. I feel I have a good grasp on being in tune with my car as well as being able to drive it consistently. When I test my cars after doing suspension mods I am confident I am driving the vehicle the same way as before the mod, so any difference in how it drives has a good chance of being attributed to the new mod, in this case poly bushings. The difference isn't negligible, it's just not drastic and the average driver would not be able to tell most likely. Given my car has the standard suspension currently body roll is not uncommon and the first corner I took, the rear felt a tad more planted and the car just felt a bit more solid. Wow, I typed a lot. I probably just should have said "Because!" |
