Just bought a 2008 E90 6MT 335xi...buy the BMW warranty or not?
So I just bought a black on black, 2008 E90 335xi 6MT with 48k miles on it (Nav, Premium, Sport, Cold Weather, Comfort Access, Factory Oil Cooler/162 18 inch rims, etc.). It is in great shape, obviously dealer maintained, HPFP recall complete, and I have about 2k miles to decide on whether or not to buy one of the extended warranties. The prices are around $2500 for the powertrain to extend to 100k miles, $3500 to simulate CPO (bumper to bumper 100k less the radio and nav), or $3900 to cover everything (including nav and radio, etc. 100k) all 6 years from the in service date (would end May 2014). I was wondering if I could get some people's feedback who have owned these cars and whether or not they think it is worth it. My guess is if one thing goes wrong with the car it will pay for itself, but it is a large check to write to essentially bet against the car. I would love to hear about your experiences in owning these cars past 50k miles and how much some of the repairs cost (or would have cost had you not had the warranty), or if you have not had any issues. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Damn, that's hit or miss. You could put that $$ into some form of savings or investment and use it toward repairs.
Most common failures are the HPFP which is still covered under a good-faith extended warranty already. Then there are the coils and injectors to cure misfires and hiccups which are very common. One person recently paid $2400 for some fried modules due to a loose battery cable in the fuse box. Front axle CV boots tear at 60-80k miles, and that repair gets expensive. There's valve cover gasket leaks, oil pan gasket leaks, water pump and thermostat failures (Map cooling codes), radiator and other plastic cooling parts crack, etc. Now that I list out the common failures we see, especially on a turbocharged all-wheel-drive car, sounds like $3900 for 6 years or the balance of 100k miles sounds like it isn't too bad. If you can double your $3900 in 6 years by investing it somewhere else, I'd skip the warranty. If you can fix your car on your own, skip the warranty. If you never want to touch the car for repairs, get the warranty.
