Top Tip - when changing spark plugs (N43, N53, N54, N55)
I guess any of us who've done a DIY spark plug change have bought a thin-walled socket for the job. However what I've only recently discovered is that you should also use a universal joint between your plug socket and extension bar.
The reason is that the access tube to the plug has a bend in it, and correctly seating and torquing the plug can be difficult unless the socket articulates. NGK have produced an excellent video to illustrate the problem:

Thanks for posting this Phil!
Any idea where to get one? I'll have a search around too. Edit laser part 6371 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Laser-6371-.../dp/B0183SWZ9Y Last edited by Dormermike; 06-21-2016 at 01:46 PM.. |

I guess the best way would be to have a N53 cylinder head spare and have a proper look. |

Yes regular thin wall socket works great and i replaced injectors also it's much more easy then on diesel cars...just pull them no special tools needed. Most important is coding once installed.

I plan on pulling my plugs to check injector health. Any sooty plugs indicate an injector problem I think. |

They fail less on index 10 and 11 but they still do,plugs on N53 will be always a bit sooty even after 3000 miles, replacing plugs every 25-30x miles is the best way to go on N53 and will keep your coils in a good shape First quality fuel is crucial for direct injection cars. Already saw an N43 car with 22x miles and dead injectors and one N53 on 114x highway miles on original ones.

Just an update to say that I checked today and the N53 engine does have the slight 'kink' in the spark plug tube mentioned in the video. But it seems from the comments above that you can get away with just a thin-walled socket. I shall be using a universal joint between my socket and extension bar in future, to avoid any possibility of plug damage during fitting.

NGK UK recommend changing the plugs on an N53 every 25,000 miles.
