Windshield scratch removal possible?

I have some scratches on my windshield... one long one for the wiper blade and a scratched area (looks like someone was trying to remove something from the windshield using a scotch pad or something).

I've heard conflicting things about windshield scratch removal. Some say that it's absolutely impossible and the windshield must be replaced (called 2 windshield shops that told me this so they are biased towards selling me a windshield) and I've heard others say that it's absolutely possible with right equipment.

Anyone here have experience?

Autoglym glass polish. It works pretty good with random orbital.
