How to remove discoloration on OEM wheels
I have discoloration around the edges of my OEM wheels. I am pretty sure it was caused by various tire shines which I no longer use. Can anyone recommend some wheel polish that is safe for the wheel? I am in the process of buying some Sonax but I doubt it will take this stuff off (maybe I am wrong).

That's there after you thoroughly wash the wheel? You could try some clay and maybe a fine finishing polish. It looks like the contamination is embedded though, so the edges might need to be completely refinished if the clay/light polish doesn't work. I'd try something like Menzerna PO106FA or M205 gently by hand for polish.

Yeah, it doesn't come off when I wash the wheels. If I scrub REALLY hard, you can see where it starts to come off in certain spots. That is why I think it might come off with some good polish.
Would some aluminum polish not work better than the products you listed? I have Mothers Aluminum Polish in stores before but was wondering what the detailing experts on here thought of it: http://www.amazon.com/Mothers-5101-A.../dp/B0009H519Y |

The wheels are clearcoated, which is why I suggested the same stuff you would use on the paint. The Mag/Aluminum polish might be safe, but I'm not confident enough to recommend you try. Someone else will chime in with an opinion though.

The Mag polish wouldn't be the best product, as it would be considered too harsh and will easily remove the clearcoat if you polish too hard.
Try a plastic polish, and if that doesn't work, try a scratch remover, and work your way up. Try it by hand, first, but a PowerBall Mini or PowerCone will likely save you some effort. |

I would use some old clay (or new if you don't have any). Don't re-use the clay on your paint after you use it on wheels though. I keep a special ball of old clay for my wheels only. It does wonders for the spots that don't come off easily.

Thanks BlackMagic! I bought some of that stuff and the discoloration came right off. Here are pictures from my cleaning. I used Sonax, Eagle One NEVR-DULL, and then finished them off with some wax.
I am slightly concerned about the ingredients of NEVR-DULL. The only listing on the can says "petroleum distillates." I hope this doesn't hard the finish on the wheels over time. |

I have this on one wheel...do you think it would work the same? For some reason all the other wheels the dirt washed right off...
This was taken after a hard scrubbing!

From my experience yesterday, I am pretty darn confident that it will come off with NEVR-DULL. Again, my only concern is what affect (if any) it will have on the finish of your wheel over time.

I wouldn't use Nevr-Dull every time you wash, but for occasional stains or stubborn spots you'll be fine. I'd say the stains posted above will come off with Nevr-Dull.

I'd be hesitant to use Nevr-Dull on OEM wheels since their painted. Nevr-Dull is a metal polish. The wheels are painted/cleared and should be treated like your the paint on your car. Would you use Nevr-Dull on the car's paint? If not, I would suggest being careful when using it on the wheels.
