1. how does it work

2. what does it prevent

3. any risks associated with it (read that it leaked into someones spark plug)

1. It intercepts the blowby from being blown back into the intake.

2. It stops oil from accumulating in you intercooler and turning into sludge, your chargepipe, Tmap, and back on your valves.

3. None that I know of, I don't know how it could leak on someones spark plugs?

4. I would have to guess the Mckinney one right now. I have the RR and it works good enough, emptied it out the other day and there was alot of oil in it.

1)
pistons that go up and down have air on both sides - some in the combustion chamber, and some on the opposite side.

As they go up and down, pressure goes up and down inside the engine (the non-combustion-chamber side).

There is a vent to allow the air to go in and out of the engine so as to not cause resistance.

Out of this vent, some amount of oil can escape.
The catch can sits off of this ventilation line, and collects the oil from the vented air, trapping it inside the can.

2)
In the N54, the crank case vent goes to the intake, so this oil is burned.
Some of this oil manages to collect at the intercooler, not making it all the way in for combustion, filling the intercooler with oil.

3)
There is no risk. Even if the line was completely disconnected, the oil would just spill out. It's 'lost oil' anyways, so who cares where it goes. Burned or spilled, either way, it's thrown away.

Oil in the spark plug wells does nothing.
Even if it covers the plug entirely, the plug still works.
Worst that can happen is you get a few misfires when the plug is totally covered - which is inconsequential. It can't cause damage.

The example you give is just stupid luck, it happened to leak where it would drain into the plug wells. You just sponge it out with some paper towels and forget about it.

4)
Who knows.
Get some worm gear clamps and make sure the hoses are sealed tight against the fittings, then none will leak.

The RR leaks a little from what i've read from other members, mines hasn't just a little build up of oil around the sight glass. But when I took it out to empty it, it was still doing its job just fine. I rather have that oil in there than in my intercooler.

i emptied mine last week and there was lots of oil in it. Mine RR was leaking but i have fixed that now. I think a OCC is essential for our engines considering the amount of blowby oil produced.

I believe the OCC to be an essential addition to these cars as well as the majority of turbo - charged cars ...

The old models were leaking in various places. Mine was leaking at the bottom and on the screw that holds it to the bracket. Got my shop to put some specific paste there to prevent any leaking . Is not like it was dropping oil ..

Good thread. I never knew what the oil catch can was either.. I always thought it was something to ease oil changes.

What would be the consequence of having oil in the intercooler instead of the catch can, and will the oil eventually exit the intercooler?

Some of the oil will sit in the intercooler and turn into sludge which will definitely hurt performance.

I haven't seen why Mckinney is any better than saikou michi and it's more expensive...

Correlation?

Is there a co-relation between the usage of aftermarket intercoolers and usage of OCCs? How come this is not a problem with the stock intercooler? Or is it and people just dont know about it? Is OCC always a good idea or only if you have an after market IC.

Too many questions as I'm getting an aftermarket IC as well...

Thanks all.
