I'm thinking of getting a JB+, but I live at around 5000' elevation. I think the ecu adapts to less oxygen by making more boost. Would the JB+ actually give me more power? If so how much? And what setting would be recommended.

One of the wonderful things about BMWs is the extent to which their engineering design reflects the demands of the alpine environment. The 335 feels right at home driving up the Großglockner. The response of the stock system to higher altitude is fantastic. It is amazing to drive from 200m up to 2000m and feel little reduction in power as the system adjusts to provide more boost at higher altitude. But there is a limit beyond which the system does not continue to increase boost to compensate.

As I understand it, the JB+ (and SSTT) take advantage of this flexibility, in effect 'tricking' the ECU into increasing boost to high altitude levels at low altitudes. So it adds 3-4psi, e.g., from 6psi to 10psi at low altitudes. This seems safe as the engine is still operating within a range of conditions that it was designed for. More power than stock, but a work load for the turbos that is within OEM specs.

What happens at high altitudes with a JB+? At some point you are going to bump up against the limit of what the ECU will adjust to. You also will be outside the range that the turbos (and peripherals such as the cooling system) are engineered to handle. The JB+ is inexpensive and convenient, but might not be the best choice for high altitude environments. I would check the high altitude regional sections and PM some of the members with tunes in places like Denver, SLC, etc.

If I lived in the mountains -- dream on... -- I would start with the BMW Perf tune and then consider one of the more complex tunes. Reliability and long term performance are my priorities.

thanks stressdoc, that's what I figured. I am on this forum almost daily soaking up info but I don't contribute much.
That also means that my turbos are working at a higher boost all the time. So I don't know if I am going to get a tune or not yet, I need to do some more research. I also want my motor to live a long and happy life.
I definitely seem to have the advantage over n/a cars at this altitude (mustangs, chargers, e46 m3's etc.). And when I go to Cal. it doesn't seem to make much of a difference compared to my n/a cars.
