Gold Leaf in Engine Bay

I was looking at some picture of the new Aston Martin One-77 and the old Mclaren F1. Both cars have gold reflective shield on the inside of the hood to reflect the heat from the engine. So that gave me this idea... Might be stupid, but I am throwing it out for you guys to give some opinion.

We all know our N54 runs pretty damn hot, to the point that I can see water steaming off the front hood in a rainy day at the stop sign. And since BMW decided to remove the insulation foam that use be attach to the bottom of the hood after MY2007, I am thinking that why can't we cover the bottom of the hood with gold leaf or something. I know it is going to look tacky as hell when you open up the engine bay. But I am also quite worry that clear coat on the top of the hood might start to fail after a few year because of the extreme heat that it is exposed to.

TBH, that sounds pretty ridiculous. it's doesn't get anywhere near hot enough to effect clearcoat.

doubt the clear coat will fail, made for this type of application

I cannot imagine the cost of gold leaf on your hood...

Why not just go with a turbo blanket(s) and some heat wrap for the downpipes.

You can purchase that type of heat shielding at Bimmerworld:

Can you just order a heatshield from your dealer (or better yet, Tischer)? They're probably not that expensive. Gold leaf is a bit radical and I doubt it would really do anything anyhow. And if it did, would you be better off keeping all that heat in your engine bay?

Id just suggest he wrap the bottom of the airbox, if nothing else it would look sweet.

agreed, i doubt it will affect the clear coat on your hood. in all honesty, the gold leaf is rarely necessary unless you have ALOT of heat in VERY CLOSE proximity to whatever you're trying to protect. for instance, my brother's 99 M Coupe is in the process of getting a custom PT6262 top mount turbo under the hood, and b/c of space restrictions, we're having to use some gold leaf on the inner fender liner/strut tower:

...as you can plainly see, this turbo is FAR closer to the chassis and the underside of the hood than anything generating that kind of heat in a 135i/335i engine bay, and will also most likely generate far more heat than the small twins on the N54. granted, the exhaust side of the turbo will get heat coated, but we're not taking any chances with the bare chassis under the hood, and so we're protecting the paint with gold leaf. will it affect any of the paint on the exterior of the car? no, not at all.

so you really don't need gold leaf anywhere under the hood of your car. and at $18/sq. ft., i doubt you'll really want to gold leaf the entire underside of your hood - it won't be cheap...in fact it would most likely be a waste of money.
