Wax Comparison: Chemical Guys 50/50 vs Dodo Juice Supernatural v2
I’ve been itching to try out Supernatural ever since Detailed Image first started offering Dodo Juice a year ago, but CG 50/50 has been such a solid and excellent product that I’ve been able to hold off for quite awhile. Well, when I received word that I’ll be performing a full restore on a 2002 Audi TT Quattro ALMS, I knew it was time to give Supernatural a try.
Here is a pic comparing the 2 packages: Smell: 50/50 has a nice, creamy smell to it, whereas Supernatural was odorless as advertised. Feel: Both products have a nice buttery feel to the wax, but Supernatural was definitely softer and smoother feeling of the two. Not so soft that you would leave a thumb imprint if you pressed down gently into the jar. Pre-wax Prep (full write-up coming in separate thread): Flex XC3401 VRG Buffer Menzerna SIP (yellow/orange pads) Menzerna P0106FF (white pad) CG EZ-Creme Glaze CG Jet Seal 109 (1 layer, cured for 24 hrs) A good polish is essential to a good product test. At first, I was hesitant to perform the product comparison over Jet Seal, as the primary purpose of this detail was a full restore. But after a quick consultation w/ George, he informed me that as long as it was allowed to cure for 24 hrs, there should be minimal impact on looks and durability. So after Jet Seal was cured, I took blue painter’s tape and divided the hood right down the center. I applied CG 50/50 on the left (passenger’s) side, and Dodo Juice Supernatural on the right (driver’s) side. Application: You can see from this picture that CG 50/50 was the creamier of the 2. Supernatural was so clear, I was hard pressed to see it! Can you even spot Supernatural on the right side in the picture? I can’t! New Detailer Tutorial: So the rule of thumb in applying wax is ‘less is more’. You can tell I follow this rule w/ Supernatural on the right, but I did exaggerate the 50/50 side to show the difference in looks when applying. This is a product comparison after all But even so, for half the hood, I only used 3 swipes of the 50/50 wax jar, on a 3 finger edge of the pad. Not much wax used huh? See my foam pad pics below. But look how well 50/50 spreads if it leaves such a visible thickness that should be applied even thinner. (Sorry, it's such a common mistake for new detailers to over apply products, that I wanted to insert a paragrah due to Supernatural's transparency) The 2nd pic shows the indentation of my 3 fingers. That’s the surface area of the pad I used in the 3 50/50 jar swipes for half the hood. Like I said, not much wax is needed! Ok, back on topic. The point was, it’s very easy to over-apply Supernatural if you’re a beginner, because it’s harder to see! So ease of application goes to 50/50. Ease of Removal: 50/50 From past experience, 50/50 is very easy to wipe off of a full car. Supernatural is also easy to remove, but had a slight resistance after product build up (but smooth on fresh microfiber) so probably takes twice as long. This is probably exacerbated by the fact it's so hard to see (if you applied thinly!) unless you view from an angle. With the waxes wiped off, the pic below doesn’t really show the difference between the 2 waxes. Darn, this comparison thread just became useless j/k. Even though the camera doesn’t show, the differences were actually very visible and distinct to the naked eye. One product was clearly superior to the other. Let’s see if I have a few more camera tricks up my sleeves. (Oh, rest of the car only has Jet Seal, if you're interested in that comparison.) For those who have viewed my old threads, I guess this light post has become my signature mark, lol. This side shows 50/50. Pretty damn good! This is the reason why I’ve used 50/50 for so long. It’s a very good product. Here’s a picture of Supernatural on the right side. It looks the same as the 50/50 side to me! Eesh. Burn your eyes out comparing the two. Damn, I need another camera trick. This is harder than I thought, cuz one product was clearly superior to the naked eye. OK! My final camera trick. Check it out. If you look hard enough, you can see that the light post on the Supernatural side is clearly more distinct than 50/50, which isn’t too bad to begin with. You can also see the Supernatural pop of the trees on the edge of the car. Summary: What pictures can’t describe, words can. I think ‘pop’ is the best word to use. 50/50 is an excellent wax and I highly recommend it for a <$40-80 wax shoot-out. But right from the beginning, Supernatural pops out at you when staring w/ the naked eye. To be honest, I went into the comparison skeptical about seeing any major differences. So when I saw Supernatural pop next to 50/50, it got me SOOO excited!! You know…that ‘wow’ feeling you just have to share with someone right there and then. Luckily my neighbor just happen to walk out, so I was able to release that pent up excitement w/ him! Haha. Supernatural is an amazing wax, and an unbelievable value at that price. Yes, it’s expensive, especially w/ solid products like 50/50 for half the price. But if you’re on the fence, think no further. It’s worth the money, and worth trying! Hope you enjoyed my comparison.

I just used the supernatural yesterday on my sparking graphite metallic e90. I am very impressed with the wet look and depth of gloss. I had previously put on dodo juice purple haze and the supernatural is definitely better in my opinion. I applied the supernatural with my bare hands which I found much easier than with an applicator. I love the fact that Dodo Juice lets you buy small samples of their wax so you don't have to drop 200 bucks to try a new premium wax. I will be interesting to see how the waxes compare in a month or two, please let us know.

Great review, I am on the fence about buying Supernatural I think now I may take the plunge. I have Rainforest Rub that I apply with my bare hands and it looks stunning even on my AW, it sems to give more of a "glow" than the other waxes and I have(Nattys Blue and CG XXX and Butter Wet Wax)

Great write up on the comparison!
I also have both (as well as countless other waxes) and have found the SN to be my favorite ... especially for the darker colors. I also did a write up last Spring for the SN ........... the Jet Black looks absolutely stunning. The version 2 has a bit more carnauba. |

Honestly, I don't think there's going to be enough of a difference to notice between v1 or v2.
The durability is what you would expect from a quality carnauba in that a single coat will give about 6 weeks protection. The one thing that I have found works really well with SN is the Red Mist qd. It definitely beats everything else when applied over this wax. The biggest benefit of the SN, as mentioned above, is the true depth it adds to the clear coat. I haven't used anything that really comes close. |

I haven't quite pulled the trigger on a container of Supernatural yet (been very happy with Purple Haze on JB), but after this thread I'm convinced. It'll have to wait until spring though, would be a waste at this point. Collinite goes on this or next weekend then it's pretty much ONR all winter long.
Damn winter. Dunno what I'm doing to do with myself.
