hey clothing guru tim...wtf is the second button on the waist called and why is it there. I use it, but I'm not sure why. Probably to keep al from getting in there so easily. Also, los wears sweatpants for the opposite reason.

Yes thats a French Fly, and its meant to secure the front of the waist better so you dont have stress creases running from waistband to front panels, it also takes pressure off the center fastener at top of pant.
In the old days, you did not wear a belt, thats a rather conventional addition of the 19th century, the british/countryside horse set folks began the advent of the belt, becoming a fashion item. The olds days a mens pant was more like a formal tuxedo pant with a large wide waistband. The military uniforms started to incorporate the belt as soldiers were not one size fit all on the battle field, and nobody had time to alter a pants waistband in the heat of battle. Many say is was Napoleon that started the uniform belt, as it was he who added the sleeve buttons on the waistcoat, some 16 buttons, to keep his soldiers from wiping their noses on their uniforms when at battle in the winter. Leave it to the french.
