Oil for the 335i help
Hello there!!
Hope everyone had a good Xmas!! The car will need a oil service soon and the car has been running 5w30 but i want to change to 5w40 oil , would this one be okay for the car?? http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60457-ca...ngine-oil.aspx but it is not fully synthetic oil whatever that means? or http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1146-sil...e-engines.aspx After a long research i found that 5 means the thickness when cold and the 30 or 40 rating means how thick it will get when hot. I assume the advantage over w30 would better protection and oil temperture will be slighty lowered as thicker oil provides better protection? My normal oil temp sits around 100-110 which i think it's abit high? Will the change of oil upset anything performace wise? The car has 39K miles done so it should be okay to change the oil ? please correct me if i am wrong and thanks for any input P.S I'm thinking of getting brake fluide , Coolants and gearbox oil changed..as the car is now 3 years old should i changed it?

I believe you need to change the oil/filter on these cars at around 5000 miles (well, give or take a bit) because the N54 engine does run very hot, and I just don't believe the official BMW intervals. I have no facts to back this up but for the sake of a £60 change (if you DIY) it gives me peace of mind. Same applies to the "sealed for life" auto gearbox fluid (I'm assuming you have an auto 'box). Well, not 5000 miles (!), but perhaps 60-75k miles? 3 years seems a bit soon though Yoro. I suspect BMW are gambling that any gearbox problems will occur when the car is way out of warranty, but again I just don't believe their "sealed for life" assertion. That, however, is not a DIY job and will cost you £300 plus I think. Brake fluid? I've bought Motul RBF600 and will change every 2 years. Coolant? No idea, sorry! Someone else will no doubt chime in. Oh, and Happy New Year! Mike. |

If you change the automatic transmission fluid, it's probably worth replacing the plastic oil pan whilst you're there, as they seem to have problems with warping and leaking eventually...

Thanks for the input guys, i will note everything down =]
For now i will get the oil change first and then once it hit 50k then i do the gearbox oil and brake fluid. many thanks especially to you mike!! I too don't believe in changing oil every 1XXXX miles as BMW has said. i tend to change around 7000 miles or so, halfway what the Idrive has said, this will be my 3rd oil change after owning the car for a year. i got it at 23K miles and change oil at 26K > 34K and next due in 41k miles.. It will be done by BMW as i got insured warranty..i will just used my empty Castrol bottles and fill the fuchs oil in =] Oh and Happy New year everyone!!
