This is an interesting point, a lot of newer shops/dealers use radiant heating units mounted on the ceilings, but still you would expect to see it on the roof and trunk as well. Not to mention the ceiling heights in shops/dealers are usually very high. But who knows if the hood was up and vehicle was raised all the way on and lift and left for 6/7 days I still doubt it but anything is possible in this case.

Rain will collect particles in the air (dust/dirt) and deposit them on your car. Some areas are worse than others, but rain is not always clean falling from the sky.

So, are you saying that during these few days at the dealer's the initially clean car collected a significant amount of dirt?

(I don't understand the significance of rain in this case. Rain does not make a clean car dirty. Rain only exaggerates the appearance of the pre-existing dust and dirt.)

Let's work through this logically.

Since the underhood stickers are missing we can assume that it is a replacement hood, not a mere respray.

The dealership had the car 6 days (two were a weekend and one was unexpected as the OP was ill and didn't pick it up as expected. Ergo, the dealership was expecting to have it for 5 days. That means that the car had to have been finished by Sunday night. Bodyshops are working on Sundays (but generally not "open") but dealerships are shut tight. That means that the car had to have been installed by Saturday noon'ish. Following that reasoning, then the bodyshop had to have had the car by Thursday to do the work by Friday and return the car Saturday. The OP dropped the car off on Wednesday, so whatever happened had to happen then.

This is an unlikely scenario. What is more probable is that it was a pre-existing condition that the OP failed to notice. To cover something like this up in a dealership would take too many people (including some at higher levels in the dealership and bodyshop) and it would come out.

The other possibility is that the hood was removed and accidently swapped for another hood.

The least likely scenario is that it just "happened" at the dealership.

when this happened is beyond me... but stated by the autobody guy. theres no paint since 1995 that will have this effect especially on a 2008 car. they dont even sell paint that will do this anymore.
I'd get a second opinion....its not the paint that would do it, its the heat and cool that causes the separation.

"Crazing is caused when two materials bonded together expand or contract at different rates causing lateral surface forces greater than the strength of bond. The expansion and contraction can be caused by thermal, chemical, or mechanical forces. Crazing can appear at any adhesion interface including that between substrate and primer, between primer and basecoat, or between basecoat and clear coat."

im still discussing this with my SA at the dealer. on the same token, they keep pushing their body shop guy at me.... irritating. im looking for ways to pin this on the dealer, if the hood is not original paint, then its possible the car had been in some form of accident and the previous owner didnt report it. figured painting it is cheaper then deductable. if this is the case im really SOL and there is no proof on the car fax.

was thinking the same thing but then again, is it that time of the year to be turning on the heat.
I use to be a tech at a Lexus and Toyota dealership and they had to relocate one of the heating unit because it did in fact damaged some hoods while the car was raised.

Is it a CPO car? Seems like if you bought it from them, there should be some expectation that it is all OEM, including paint. Maybe you need to take it up with the sales department. The way i see it, either their sales department or their shop screwed you. Let them fight it out.

Serious, they swapped the hood bud, look for signs of removal by the hood hinges, any sign of movement by the hosing for the washer jets.
Also the hood insulation ect..

i dont understand how you can accept it?

im looking into so many arguments with the dealer... the hood swap IS possible, im going to a body shop to help me look for broken paint by the screws or mis alignment.

the raised car and heat is also another option. thanks for the help. keep them coming.

When I lived in Kansas there was so much dirt in the air whenever it rained it came down like mud.

1. I'd say your hood was swapped. You have to have some independant verification on but the dealer can say "When"?

2. You have to have proof the hood was fine before. If you don't, it could have been swapped long ago.

3. You maybe telling the truth, but its a hell of a story and the burden of proof is on you. Its possibe someone swapped your hood. But how can a dealer be sure you not trying to pull a fast one on them?

4. They use heaters in San Jose in October?

Thanks for sharing the saga with us. Have you found out what it would cost to repaint? Perhaps a dealer will do it at cost for you or split it with you?
