One thing I've used for such problems is Novus #2 plastic polish. It will take off that yellow paint, and polish out the scratches in the clear coat. It's kind of like rubbing compound, but milder. Works great, and it won't do damage as long as you don't rub too hard. I'd be careful with acetone. If you get it on your headlight lenses, it will likely damage them.

Use Claybar and soap to get the paint off.
Then use Quixx to get the scratches out.

My wife has hit the post between our garage door multiple times in multiple cars. That process works for me everytime, she'll look good as new.

Go to UAP or APM , and buy a bottle of BASF hand rubbing and polishing compound , pick up a clean detailing cloth there too.

Start on the yellow with the rubbing compound in a smooth back and forth motion (not circles!!). gradually spread the swath to include the area immediately around the yellow. Ideally you want uniform dull finish in black. then move to the polish. same deal, but a lot of the luster should come back, unless you have cut through your own clear/base coat. then follow it up with a decent cleaner wax/polish.

I have found also that on thick stuff, sometimes it helps to start with wet-sanding to peel it back. Stick with 1500 to 2000 grit.

It might take you an hour or so along with 20 bucks, but you may get it hidden a bit better than what it is.

I had a similar experience right around the 3 month mark.

Wife was driving my car all day and she called me and said someone did a hit and run on the car while she was at the grocery store. She was quite adamant, saying she suspected a white pickup truck parked alongside. I was naturally quite upset. I told her to go call the insurance company pronto.

So when I went home to survey the damage, I took a close look, almost CSI-style (

) and concluded from the powdery texture of the paint residues that it couldn't be automotive paint. Then I asked her if she parked near white garage columns and she started to doubt herself.

To be honest I was getting quite upset, but we reached a middle ground, she paid for the low deductible and we got the bumper resprayed. Everyone was happy, happy.

Hey, my wife and I have separate accounts as well. I don't want to see her frivolous purchases, and she doesn't need to see mine. Less arguments. Sure, our money is OUR money, but sometimes you need artificial boundaries. Trust me, if we could justify it, she'd have her own set of wheels, but as it is, I only drive my car about 10K/year. The car is a not an investment, it's an expensive toy - but I love cars.

For the record, she offered to pay whatever to get it fixed. I'm just trying to find the low cost solution. If I can get it buffed out and it looks seamless, I would be thrilled. Not looking forward to respray option. Thanks for the suggestions re: clay bar, rubbing compound, etc. I may look into those as well. First off, I'm taking it to a detailer to see if he can do anything for me. I'll go from there.

Wow, lotsa off-topic stuff about wives and cars. You can tell it's definitely one of those relationship dividing lines!

as blackandproud puts it, I don't think its uncommon for spouses to have seperate accounts. I think its good financial practice. For routine bills, a good solution is to have a joint account solely for that purpose.

No its more like you can tell who the people are who have relationship issues. My wife crashes car, I'm worried about how she is, not whether my "replaceable" car is okay. Well Socrates, I'd hardly say my wife "crashed" my car to any degree where I have to worry about her. Of course I'm not going to be worrying about my car if my wife is hurt. If you're the kind of guy that can skip down the street whistling dixie after your wife destroys your "new car high", more power to you.

And as far as the separate accounts go, to each their own. My wife doesn't want joint finances any more than I do. I keeps the friction in that area to a minimum, and considering a large majority of spouses seem to fight over money, that's not a bad thing. It's just the illusion of independence maybe, but it works for us!
