Best speed/fuel economy?

I know some of you have had good success with hyper-miling your cars, and I've started getting better just by dropping down to about 71mph (average, indicated) as opposed to 75mph indicated...

Where does the sweet spot seem to be? and how do you guys handle the 70mph zones? Those seem to kill me if i'm running anything over 75mph indicated (typically i set myself for 10mph over, with the gps stating that its more like 7mph over).

Try as I might, I can't seem to keep the speed below 75 on the freeways. In unscientfic testing in attempts to drive at 70 resulted in lower mileage indications than at 75, so I always kicked it up to 75. I think my time driving the Z06 has corrupted me.

Freeway speeds aren't the best

Driving from Seattle to Pullman (WA State) is about 1/2 freeway, 1/2 2-lane. IME the best mileage is on the slower sections, around 55 mph..

Wind has a lot to do with mileage on that route - at least as much as much as +- 2 mpg.
Kind of hilly, too. Best mileage is usually attained at the lowest spot (after Snoqualmie Pass eastbound).
Best freeway mileage I've seen is Seattle-Portland on I5 - it's pretty flat.

In my experience, driving 75 mph even in below freezing temperatures still nets 42+ mpg. Oddly enough, driving 65mph didn't seem to improve it by too much, maybe up to 44 or 45.

interesting -- 75mph for me seems to net around 36, dropping down to 71-72 seems to be more in the 39-40 range. I've got a 200 mile trip to make today, all highway at 65-70 and i'll report back with what i end up with for that trip... I'll try to set the cruise at 75 and just leave it for the whole trip if i can.

I set mine to 78mph. It seems that it is best for still passing cars, but yielding good mpg's (35 or so). I found even going 80mph, the mpg drops a bit.

Yeah I notice great mileage around 70-75mph. These cars are so efficient it's amazing.

My winter setup is considerably lighter than my Summers so I see even better mileage. Imagine if we had a drag coefficient of .26 or even .27 instead of the .29 we have? We'd be getting over 40mpg easily.

And our 100mph+ speed increase will be faster

well, i did between 75 and 77 as best i could, with some traffic in the midst of all of it, and the re-fuel after about 20 miles of stop/go driving ended up like this:

Indicated on idrive:
Air temp 49F-53F
35.6mpg
72.1mph
460 miles to empty, indicating the tank would last ~600miles - at one point in the trip, while doing 75mph after the fuel up, it was showing almost 660 miles to the tank (iirc, 560 miles remaining, 100 miles driven on the odometer)

Calculated fuel economy via fuelly was 37.1 for the 4 gallons i burned on the trip.

I can only complain a bit, but i really would love to get up toward 40 more often. In town, worst i've ever gotten was 29, which is usually the best that a 335i/s4 sees.

Maybe you need some new or re-gapped plugs or points.

Nah, I think maybe the apex seal on his rear rotor chamber is going bad.

?..but seriously Mact, that's not obscenely low or anything, but I get a little better than that with a very heavy foot, lots of city driving, and lots of idling. I have about 46k on my 2011, have performed all recalls, change oil at half intervals, and do use fuel additives...I also may or may not have a JBD at 100%. Any clear differences to pick out (just curious)?

Also, are you talking OBC mpg or calculated?

This car gets incredible mileage for its power. Last time I did a relatively long road trip, driving from DC to Knoxville and back, I saw pretty exceptional mpgs. Driving 70-80 mph, over the mountains and with 2 people & luggage on board, and in freezing temperatures (dense air kills fuel economy) I saw a calculated 41 mpg on the return trip. Which included about 10% stop n go city driving.

For reference, those are the kind of mpgs you'd see out of a dedicated econo-box like the Chevy Cruze eco.
So getting that in a car that can hold its own against mustangs and 350zs and previous generation M3s is exceptional.

That is precisely why I bought the car. Best of both worlds plus it handles too. What more could you want?

at 40 mph i got 45 mpg, but at WOT through first 4 gears at around 130 mph i get 27.5 mpg
i always settle for smiles per gallon as much as this cliche has lost its awe

it all depends on how you want to treat the car with current diesel prices

I also recommend going over to fuelly.com and get set up there -- easiest way i've found to track historic fuel economy.

Here's my overview: http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rwilmoth/335d

And it seems that there are a lot of 335d folks from the US that are averaging in the 32-35 range.

I'd be included in that. I should have tracked mine from long ago. This car can easily get 40mpg if babied but where is the fun in that? I rarely ever get below 30mpg.

My average is 33mpg.

Try doing actual fuel calculation instead of relying on the on-board calculator. Its going to estimate low (in my experience) and throw out higher samples when doing the average as potentially erroneous.

If you have a smartphone, i recommend using fuelly's mobile website to calculate and capture. Do this for a month and first, you'll be getting your 'actual' fuel mileage, calculated by you, also have a nice way to track it and graph it/etc.
