Updating Sat Nav to 2012 - CIC iDrive
I have a European 07/2009 build E90 with professional navigation. i think its option 609.
basically i found out the other day it has the 2008-2 version of European premium! so i phoned BMW Park Lane, where i bought it from, and had to argue with them for quite a while, explaining that i think its unacceptable for a 07/2009 build car to have 2008-2 sat nav. they finally agreed and sent me a free 2009-2 disk. i have now found out, from other BMW dealers, that this disk will not work! apparantly because my sat nav doesnt have a disk, its needs to get coded as well. i got a quote and BMW will charge £220 (£20 disk and £200 for just a code!) and around £100 for labour. so about £320 just to update my nav to 2012!! I was wondering if there was a way i could get this done cheaper by third parties? i have heard something about buying 3 dvds and buying a code specific to my VIN. has anyone done this successfully? |

Sounds like he's on about the maps loaded onto the Hard Drive although his car must have been one of the first. I've just upgraded the maps in my 2011 F10 to European Premium 2012 maps, on the HDD, which cost me £50 for the activation code. The map DVDs (3 of them) I downloaded and burned myself.
Yes, exactly what I did.

Op, you can do it yourself, you need the dvds, either download or buy from bmw for 20 quid,
Then you buy the code from bmw, they quoted me 150. Then pop the dvds in the cd slot and enter the code when prompted, easy. Certainly not 'coding' and certainly not worth 100 labour! Mine was a 4/2009 build and it came with 2008-1 maps. Even into 2010 build they still had 2008 maps. Good price xenon, was that from bmw? |

I downloaded the 2012 Premium DVDs at no cost and then obtained the code from *****************
Got the code after about 4 minutes; £50.

are the DVDs from BMW the same as what he or you have downloaded? if it is then i might as well just buy it off BMW as its £20. then all i need is that code from ******* right? Also, do we get any more sat nav features, like 7 digit postcode entry? |

AFAIK you get 7 digit post code from about 2010
I'd buy the discs from BMW too, easier. It's 20 gigabytes to download, which is twice our monthly broadband allowance! And you need 3 fancy dual layered 8GB dvds, which I don't have a special dual layered writer for. And the blank discs cost about 2 quid each. Thanks for the link xenon. I remember trying some dodgy Romanian guy a while back, the Dubai based payment site just spammed me to death so I abandoned that. Last edited by doughboy; 06-13-2012 at 10:11 AM.. |

Yes to get 7 - digit postcode you need the later operating software as well. The discs I downloaded and subsequently burned are the same as those from BMW and my status ion the iDrive now says "European PREMIUM 2012". I've passed those discs on to another member on here - he might be happy to pass them on when he's done but if BMW sell them for a score (I didn't realise they would without wanting to sell a code too) then that's easy enough.

Your last post on this was answered. With the older system that justs reads direct from a DVD it's easier as there is no vehicle-specific activation codes, you simply need a copy of the 2012 DVD of which there are plenty of copies floating around. Somebody posted a link when you asked this before.

ok so got the dvd update from BMW today for around £20. sent ******* payment for the code with my full VIN number. code came back within half hour. put first disk in (3 in total) and i asked for the code. put the 20 digit code i bought from ******* and now its updating via the first disk. painfully slow though!
if anyone needs a code or wants to update their sat nav, i can definately vouch for *******. he responds to emails very quickly and will give you a working code. he is quite well known on gpsunderground.com. all i have to do now is wait 3 hours! |

Does anyone know how you go about updating business nav - I know it's done via the glovebox USB presumably by a large USB stick, but don't know any more. Is there supposed to be an "Update Software" option on the iDrive or is it just autoplay?

You can also update the Pro Nav from the glovebox USB port - I understand it's the same procedure. The DVD disc contents can be copied onto 3 USB sticks (it won't work from only one stick unless you copy the individual contents).
Do you have a DVD/CD drive in the car???? Mike |

Do the USB sticks need to be bootable or will simply copying the contents of the DVD onto them be sufficient? |
